Accommodation in Knaben
Knaben is Norway’s only mining town. The headframe, winding tower and processing plant have been preserved intact, making the local mining heritage visible. Knaben is also one of the gateways to the Setesdal Vesthei, Ryfylke and Frafjordheiane Landscape Protected Area. This gives you a choice of different focuses for your trip: mining history or outdoor activities.
Mining history in Knaben
The Knaben Mining Museum is located in the former administrative building of the mining company and presents Knaben’s mining and wartime history. On the second floor, the furnishings recreate how the rooms looked when the director lived there. This historical connection adds insight into the building’s former use to the story of the mining industry.
The Knaben Visitors’ Mine offers a guided tour of Knaben’s molybdenum mines and the abandoned mine “Den forlatte gruva.” The guided tour of “Den forlatte gruva” lasts one hour. The temperature in the mines remains a constant 7°C year-round, in both summer and winter. So even in the warm season, be prepared for cool conditions on the tour, and check the current tour dates before you travel.
Hiking trails and activities
Marked hiking trails lead from Knaben to places including Roma Gruver. For cross-country skiing, there is the Husmorløypa trail around the mining town; it is easy to access. The area thus offers both hiking trails and a dedicated cross-country skiing option, without specifying a particular trail length or walking time.
The local offering also includes shorter activities: Knaben has a nine-hole disc golf course suitable for adults and children. The Knabejakta orienteering event takes place in Knabeheia and is suitable for the whole family. The two activities appeal to different interests—disc golf and orienteering in the landscape.
Knaben Fjellcamp has three shelters by Bergetjørn. One of them can be closed off and has a fire pit. When planning your visit to these places and activities, distinguish between the marked hiking trails, the cross-country ski trail and the individual local activities.
Travel in connection with Knaben Leirskole
To travel to Knaben Leirskole, you can take a train to Storekvina station and then a bus; the bus journey takes about 45 minutes. Check the connection before departure. This information applies to travel to Knaben Leirskole.
More options in the wider destination of Kvinesdal
The wider destination of Kvinesdal has other places to visit, which you can consider separately from the attractions in Knaben. KVINAbadet is located in the centre of Kvinesdal. It has a 25-metre sports pool, a therapy pool with a water temperature of 34°C and a paddling pool for the youngest visitors. Check opening hours before you arrive.
The Fjordsyn day cabin is on Dyreknuden and offers views over Fedafjord. The main access route is a hiking trail from the car park at Sande outdoor recreation area. As road and parking conditions can change, it is worth checking them before you set off.
In Feda, visitors can experience the traditional craft of cooperage, “bøkring,” at Bøkkerbua during the summer season, as it was practised about 100 years ago. Canoes can also be rented at Bøkkerbua. There is a small swimming spot by the river next to Bøkkerbua; swimming conditions depend on the weather. Alongside Knaben’s mining history, Kvinesdal therefore offers other places to visit that are specifically part of the wider destination.
