Søgne can be explored through a range of travel interests: the coast offers beaches and opportunities for water sports, while trails through forest and archipelago landscapes and cultural sites offer distinct highlights. If you are looking for hotels in Søgne, these places can help you plan your days here.

Beaches and Coastal Landscapes

Høllesanden is a gently sloping sandy beach in Høllen, Søgne. A shop, toilet facilities and a car park are right next to it. The beach is suitable for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Check local conditions and rules before taking part in water sports.

In Helleviga, you will find walking paths and hiking trails, beaches, smooth rocks, and a landing and departure pier. Helleviga is part of Friluftsparken i Søgne, a nature-oriented recreation area covering about 1,000 mål. Here, trails and beaches sit alongside the rocky stretches of coastline.

Hiking Trails Between Forest and the Skerry Coast

Søgne has numerous hiking trails. Some pass through forests with freshwater lakes, while others follow the skerry coast, with smooth rocks and small beaches. One specifically described route is the 800-metre Kyststien from Verftet to Olavsundet on Kapelløya. It runs mostly through the Oksøy-Ryvingen landscape protection area; conditions on the trail may vary.

The Kyststien has a specified route length, while the rest of the trail network takes you through a variety of forest and coastal landscapes. Romsviga and Helleviga are also linked by marked trails: the routes follow either the coast or the forest. Romsviga itself is a historic coastal farm with several buildings. The boats there document a local boatbuilding tradition and are connected with the UNESCO World Heritage in Søgne and Sørlandet.

Boats in Romsviga can be rented on request and subject to availability. A mandatory safety and operating briefing is required before use and takes about 30 minutes. Allow time for this and confirm availability before counting on being able to use a boat.

Culture, Archaeology and History

Søgne gamle prestegård is a cultural centre and meeting place for events, art exhibitions and nature experiences throughout the year. Galleri Fjøset there presents changing art exhibitions year-round; the programme may change. Elvefestivalen is also held every September, is free of charge and open to everyone. Check the current annual programme before your trip.

The Søgne Bygdemuseum is located at the same site, with exhibitions about the old farming community. The museum includes a bread oven and a kitchen. A staircase is intended to make access to the second floor of this part of the building easier; this is not a general statement about accessibility. Søgne gamle kirke is one of Norway’s oldest timber churches and dates from around 1580.

The exhibition “Soloppgang – De første menneskene på Agder” (Sunrise – The First People in Agder) includes a copy of the skull of Sol, a woman almost 9,000 years old who was found in Søgne. It also features three films and around 50 authentic finds. Exhibition content may change. In a rock cave near Søgne gamle prestegård, visitors can also see and touch the Biber submarine, one of Hitler’s secret weapons. Check current access conditions before your visit.

On Helgøya in Ny-Hellesund, the coastal fort includes tunnels, passageways and gun emplacements from the Second World War. The cultural environment of Ny-Hellesund is one of the best-preserved historic harbour environments on Norway’s south coast and was protected in 2016. Skolehuset hosts cultural events such as concerts, theatre performances, lectures and bazaars; check the current programme.

Ferry Connection to Ny-Hellesund

The M/B Hannibal ferry runs from Høllen to Ny-Hellesund, Skarpøya and Borøya in Søgne. The route operates year-round; check the current timetable before travelling. The M/B Hannibal has room for 30 passengers and is adapted to transport one wheelchair. Confirm current operating and accessibility conditions before your trip.

Olavsundet in Ny-Hellesund is one of the two harbour entrances between Kapelløya and Helgøya. The strait features monograms of several members of the Norwegian royal family. The Kyststien on Kapelløya runs from Verftet to Olavsundet, linking a specifically named hiking route with a place of cultural and historical interest.
