Hægeland combines hiking trails with scenic views, historic buildings and swimming spots at Sandlandsvannet. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay here, the focus of your trip can help you choose: Would you mainly like to go hiking, learn about local history or spend time by the water? The destinations below vary in trail length, route and theme, offering practical guidance to help you plan.

Hiking trails and views in Hægeland

In Hægeland, you can hike to Ropstadknuten, where the view stretches across half of Agder. The viewpoint is a highlight for travelers who want to combine a hike with far-reaching views.

A section of the Fjellmannsvegen, about 10 km long, is signposted for hikers. It leads from Ærekilen via Lauvåsheia to Homme, near Hægeland Church. Another section, 5 km long, runs from Bringsvær leirskole to Tjomsås; Bringsvær is in Hægeland. The routes differ in length and endpoints: the roughly 10 km between Ærekilen and Homme can be compared with the 5 km between Bringsvær and Tjomsås. This lets you compare the two sections based on the stated distances and destinations.

The Fjellmannsvegen leads from Hægeland to Eikeland; from Eikeland, the route is marked as a hiking trail to Einstabland. This sequence keeps the route sections distinct: first the Fjellmannsvegen to Eikeland, then the marked hiking trail to Einstabland. Espelandskleiva offers a different focus. This idyllic hiking trail, now somewhat overgrown, follows the old Setesdalsvegen between Åmdalsvegen and Espeland in Hægeland.

A 2.5 km nature trail adds a shorter option to the longer sections. Trail conditions and signage can change, so check current route conditions and markings before setting out.

Swimming spots and local history

There are several lovely swimming spots at Sandlandsvannet where children and adults can swim and spend time by the water. This offers a different kind of outing alongside the hiking trails: here, the focus is on swimming in the lake, not on the length of a hiking route.

Hægeland Church is an octagonal church dating from 1830. Several surviving logs and boards from the former church hang in its vestibule. A three-legged tin lantern, which has been in use since at least 1663, is also on display there. Comparing the year the church was built with the lantern highlights the different periods represented in the church’s history.

The Hægeland local museum is right by Riksveg 9, just before the town center at Hægelandskrossen. Alongside the church, it provides another named point of interest in the area’s history, in a clearly described location near the center.

Railway history and regional context

Hægeland station is also part of the area’s railway history. On 26 November 1895, the station began operating in connection with the temporary opening of the Setesdalsbanen from Kristiansand to Hægeland. This historical milestone adds a railway connection with a precise date to the area’s history.

In the wider destination of Vennesla, the narrow-gauge heritage railway Setesdalsbanen also runs along an 8-kilometer route between Grovane and Røyknes stations. Its track gauge is 1,067 mm. The two railway references differ in location and period: Grovane–Røyknes is the heritage railway route in Vennesla, while the station’s opening in Hægeland was associated with the temporary opening at the time of the line from Kristiansand to Hægeland.
