The local sights offer different points of interest, from salmon fishing and the pedestrian bridge to a zipline, sculptures and geological history.

The Lågen and Kjærra: river, fishing and bridge

The Kjærra Falls are part of the Numedalslågen. Kjærrafossen is particularly known for salmon fishing; the historic fishing methods are also well documented. Many kayakers visit Kjærra. Fishing, the river landscape and visits by kayakers thus offer different perspectives on the same stretch of water.

Kjærrabrua is a 132 m-long pedestrian bridge over the Lågen, with a cantilevered span of 91 m. The overall length and span are different measurements of the structure, giving you two specific reference points when looking at the bridge.

Activities at Kjærra Fossepark

You can go for a walk in Kjærra Fossepark. Ormen Lange, the longest zipline at Høyt & Lavt, is 380 m long and runs high above the Lågen. The attraction is subject to the operator’s availability. So check in advance whether the ride is offered on the day of your visit.

Himmelfallet is a 30 m-high jump tower that gives the feeling of free-falling. This attraction is also subject to the operator’s availability; check before your visit to see whether it is available. The two experiences differ in form: Ormen Lange is a 380 m-long zipline, while Himmelfallet is a 30 m-high jump tower.

Art, geological history and river views

Several sculptures by the artist Trond Fredriksen stand in Kjærra Fossepark. The Tidslinjen (Timeline) also runs along Myrejordet, illustrating the development of the Earth over the last 4.5 billion years. The sculptures add a distinct artistic touch, while the timeline broadens the view to geological history. This means that the same park offers two different ways to explore: individual works of art and a depiction of our planet’s development.

At Laagen HUB, panoramic windows with a 180-degree view look out onto the river. This detail, too, underscores how prominent the Lågen is in Steinsholt’s places and structures described here.

More perspectives in the wider destination of Larvik

If you would also like to include Larvik in your travel plans, you will find other distinct destinations there. Bøkeskogen is a protected landscape area and part of the Gea Norvegica Geopark. The woodland belongs to the large Ra moraine from the end of the last Ice Age and contains more than 60 preserved burial mounds. There are blue-marked circular trails for walks, with lengths of 2, 6 and 10 km. These three distances offer a practical guide when choosing how far you would like to walk.

Larvik also offers further cultural and historical themes: Kaupang was founded around the year 800 as a centre for trade and production. The exhibitions there provide insights into the work of archaeologists, the finds and what is known today about the history of the site. Herregården was built in 1674 for Ulrik Fredrik Gyldenløve and recalls the more than 400-year history of Denmark-Norway. Fredriksvern verft was Norway’s first main naval base; construction began in 1750. These destinations add distinct nature and history themes in Larvik to your travel plans.
