Våle can be explored through three distinct themes: the medieval stone Våle kirke, the protected deciduous forest Våle prestegårdsskog, and the historic Våle prestegård. This provides clear guidance when planning your trip, whether you are particularly interested in church architecture, nature or farming history. Tønsberg is a separate destination with cultural and natural attractions; these should be distinguished from the sights in Våle.

Våle kirke: Medieval architecture and altarpiece

Våle kirke was built of stone in the 12th century. This makes it a specific point of interest for anyone interested in medieval churches. Another important feature is the altarpiece, dating from around 1650. It consists of seven panels and complements the church’s early history with a much later example of ecclesiastical design. The two dates help distinguish the building from its furnishings historically: the church dates from the 12th century, while the altarpiece is from the mid-17th century. Together, they give the church a character that can be appreciated through both its architecture and its furnishings.

Våle prestegårdsskog: Beech forest and conservation purpose

The Våle prestegårdsskog nature reserve is a deciduous forest dominated by beech trees. Its conservation purpose is more specifically defined: to preserve a rich deciduous forest stand with a grass–beech forest community. The description of the forest and the designation of its conservation purpose emphasize different aspects. One identifies the forest type and predominant tree species, while the other specifies the forest community to be preserved. This makes it possible to understand the natural area both generally as a beech forest and in terms of its specific conservation objective.

Våle prestegård: Museum and local history

Våle prestegård is home to a museum with farming collections, a school museum and horse harnesses. These themes bring together agricultural life, school history and the use of horses without reducing them to a single subject. The farm itself is protected as a cultural heritage site under Section 15 of the Norwegian Cultural Heritage Act, pursuant to a resolution dated 10 May 1991. The former main road between Bragernes (Drammen) and Larvik is also significant to the area’s history: it ran through Vålebygda and passed Våle prestegård. The farm can therefore be understood both through its collection themes and its historic location along this route.

Culture and nature in the wider destination of Tønsberg

The wider destination of Tønsberg offers other distinct points of interest. Slottsfjellsmuseet is located in central Tønsberg, at the foot of Slottsfjell, and has exhibitions on the Middle Ages and the city’s history. Its Viking Hall displays the trading ship from Klåstad, Norway’s fourth Viking ship. It is the only preserved Viking ship on display outside Oslo. As information about the exhibition may change, it is advisable to check again before your trip.

The building history of Tønsberg Cathedral also offers a different historical perspective from that of the medieval Våle kirke. The cathedral was built in 1858 over the ruins of an 11th-century basilica dedicated to the Archdeacon St. Lawrence. It also contains furnishings from Lavranskyrka and the medieval Mariakirche. The ruins of Tunsberghus can be seen on Slottsfjellet. Ruins are all that remain of Olavskirken, Norway’s only round church; they are in the city centre, opposite the Tønsberg library.

Art enthusiasts can visit permanent and temporary exhibitions at the Haugar Art Museum. The current exhibition programme may change. Nature and activities also add to Tønsberg’s appeal: the Ilene nature reserve is a 90-hectare Ramsar site, and paddling trips in Tønsberg can be found on UT.no. Route options and water conditions may vary. At the Tønsberg quay, the replica ships Saga Oseberg and Saga Farmann can be seen at Vikingodden year-round, except when the ships are on voyages. Tønsberg thus brings together museums and church history, art, protected nature and ships as distinct themes.
