Brusno: Spa History, Culture and Trails
Accommodation in Brusno
Explore Brusno through a range of interests: the history of the Kúpele Brusno spa, local culture, and trails for hiking or cycling. If you’re looking for a hotel in Brusno, consider whether spa history, traditional cuisine or outdoor activities will be the focus of your stay as you plan your trip.
Spa History and Spa Park
The first season at the Kúpele Brusno spa began in the spring of 1838, after the first spa house was completed in 1837. This sequence marks two important milestones in the spa’s history: the house was completed, and the first season followed the next spring. The spa park is also part of the town’s historic character. It is designated a cultural monument and features centuries-old lime trees, yews, spruces, poplars and chestnut trees, as well as small ponds and a fountain. Its protected status and varied landscaping offer different ways to explore the area if you are interested in history and landscape.
Chapels and Architectural History
The Neo-Gothic Chapel of St. Anne in Brusno was built in 1910 on the site of an older chapel dating from 1853. An originally Gothic church in Brusno was built as early as the 15th century and was enlarged and given new vaulted ceilings in the Baroque style in 1744 and 1766. The two building histories thus differ both in their dates and in their architectural development: for the chapel, its older predecessor is part of the site’s history, while the church’s later Baroque alterations add to its earlier origins.
Čipkárskô: Markets, Crafts and Cuisine
The annual local cultural festival Čipkárskô brings together folk cuisine, crafts and markets. Its culinary tradition includes a dish that Brusno’s ancestors cooked on trips to markets while trading lace. Preparing it in a “Mašina” is part of this tradition. The story of the dish thus links cuisine with lace trading and journeys to the markets.
Teams of four compete at Čipkárskô. They must prepare the Čipkárskô dish in Mašinas. Both the shared cooking task and this particular method of preparation are therefore part of the competition format. If you’re interested in local culture, Čipkárskô offers a distinctive perspective on Brusno: alongside crafts and market activity, it features a food tradition connected with the journeys of the ancestors.
Hiking Trails, a Promenade and a Cycling Route
There are numerous hiking trails around the municipality of Brusno, leading to the attractive ridges of the Low Tatras and the Poľana massif. Brusno is also a starting point for summer hiking and cycling, as well as winter hiking, particularly towards the recreational areas of the Vepor Mountains. The activities vary by season: hiking and cycling are the main options in summer, while winter hiking is listed as a separate possibility.
A well-maintained promenade leads from the spa facilities to the Skala viewpoint. For a cycling trip, the Brusno–Strelníky–Šalková route is another option; it starts in the market square of the spa municipality of Brusno. The promenade has a named destination, while the cycling route starts in the market square. Check current route conditions before setting out on your cycling trip.
