Moštenica: Nature and culture on the southern slopes of the Low Tatras
Accommodation in Moštenica
Moštenica lies on the southern slopes of the western part of the Low Tatras. Forests cover most of the municipality’s territory. At the same time, the Moštenické travertíny are a protected natural monument within the municipality’s cadastral area; they lie in the protected zone of a national park. The landscape thus combines a largely forested setting with a distinctive natural formation.
Moštenické travertíny and the mountain landscape
The travertine complex forms a cascade about 500 metres long, with six tiers, and lies at elevations between 650 and 800 metres. The protected travertine terrace is active and includes five water outlets. This natural monument is notable for the sequence of tiers, the size of the cascade and its water outlets. The area is used for recreation, but is not served by either a hiking trail or an educational trail. Check local conditions before visiting.
Hiking and the mineral spring
Moštenica is a starting point for the ridge of the Low Tatras. A hiking route leads through the Uhliarska Valley, Moštenická Kyslá, Zubová, Hadlanka and Kozí chrbát to Hiadeľské sedlo; the walk takes 3 hours and 30 minutes. These waypoints give the hike a clear route, while its duration provides a specific timeframe for planning. This refers to the hike from Moštenica to Hiadeľské sedlo.
The Moštenická kyslá mineral spring is also part of the area’s history: a recreation centre developed around it. Moštenica thus brings together several distinct features—the setting as a starting point for a mountain hike, the travertine landscape and the development of a recreation area associated with the spring. If you are interested in the area’s nature and history, these features offer different ways to shape your stay.
Architectural history and local remembrance
The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is Neoclassical and was built in 1846–1847. Its main altar has a Crucifixion painting by J. B. Klemens, created in 1846. The construction and painting dates are therefore close together; the church and its altarpiece can be considered together as evidence of local architectural and art history.
The former Mining Office is a Renaissance building dating from 1561, with a U-shaped floor plan. It is remembered as the site of a military hospital during the Slovak National Uprising. The building’s changing historical roles offer a different perspective on Moštenica’s past, complementing its ecclesiastical architecture.
Local commemorative heritage also includes the graves of fallen partisans in the cemetery and a monument near the former lime kiln. The monument commemorates murdered Hungarian soldiers and one civilian victim; the memorial sites are maintained. Hradište also points to an earlier history of settlement: it is a hilltop settlement from the Early and Late Bronze Age, probably fortified with a ditch. A cremation grave of the Lusatian culture was found there.
Traditional domestic production in Moštenica included woodworking and linen weaving. These craft traditions are another part of the area’s history, alongside its preserved buildings, memorial sites and archaeological traces. Together, they paint a picture that extends beyond the landscape to include the area’s cultural development.
