Brehy lies on the left bank of the Hron. When planning your trip, consider exploring its pottery tradition, architectural history, and the paths in the surrounding area. Activities around the river are also worth considering. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Brehy, you can decide in advance whether to focus on cultural history, hiking, or water sports.

Pottery tradition and museum

Pottery has a long tradition in Brehy. In 1715, 16 potters were recorded. From the early 18th century until 1918, residents of Brehy transported earthenware on carts throughout the Kingdom of Hungary. The town’s history therefore encompasses both the craft itself and the transport of goods across the kingdom.

The Hrnčiarske múzeum Brehy is dedicated to preserving the potter’s house and Brehy’s original, only functioning pottery kiln. The museum also holds public events and leisure activities, as well as creative workshops and sessions, including for children. If you are interested in the history of pottery, these activities offer a hands-on experience alongside the historical subject matter. Check specific dates in advance.

The town’s architectural history

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Joseph the Foster Father was completed and consecrated on November 5, 1786. Another architectural form is the traditional row of houses along a stream, dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In historical terms, the church has a precise date, while the row of houses represents a longer building period.

Landscape and trails

More than 90 percent of the cadastral area of Brehy is part of the Štiavnické vrchy Protected Landscape Area. This also includes a small part of the built-up area in the village’s Liešna district, where the second level of protection applies.

The educational trail Forgotten Mining Monuments in Brehy combines hiking with learning about local history. The route is easy and suitable for families with children. If you plan to take this route, check the trail conditions and signage before setting off.

A yellow-marked hiking route leads from Brehy to the 650-meter-high Hulín through pleasant woodland. The Calvary of Brehy lies below Mount Kaliště, on a small rise in the Laštok district. From the yellow-marked main road, it is just a few minutes along a narrow path; the walk is short and easy. The routes described differ in both destination and time required: the approach to the Calvary is short, while the route to Hulín is described as a hiking trail.
