Nová Baňa combines evidence of gold mining with hiking trails and religious cultural heritage. Kalvária, the Pohronské Museum and the various routes offer different focuses for planning your trip: from historic buildings and collections to trails through forest and waterside landscapes.

Kalvária and Mining History

Kalvária in Nová Baňa is a national cultural monument. Its legal designation took effect on 4 November 2024. The 17 protected structures include the Calvary hill, the Church of the Holy Cross, the Chapel of the Suffering Christ and fourteen Stations of the Cross chapels. The Way of the Cross leads from the foot of Záhrb Hill to the church at its summit. In 2024, the heritage authority described regular religious processions and Masses at the site and also listed it as a resting place in nature with views of Nová Baňa.

The Pohronské Museum, founded in 1952, offers another way to explore the city's history. It is housed in the former town hall: an originally four-storey Gothic building dating from the second half of the 14th century, which was renovated in the mid-18th century and is protected as a cultural monument. The collection comprises more than 12,000 objects. These include archaeological finds and artefacts related to mining, crafts and folk production, including pottery, glassmaking and woodcarving.

Two churches also offer different historical perspectives. The originally Gothic Roman Catholic church was built in the second half of the 14th century and rebuilt between 1725 and 1729 after its destruction. The Hospital Church is a protected cultural monument and one of the oldest historic buildings in Nová Baňa. Its construction was closely connected with the neighbouring hospital in 1391.

Compare Educational Trails and Routes

The mining educational trail system comprises two circular routes focused on history. The black route is 4.3 kilometres long with an elevation gain of 210 metres; the green route is 5.6 kilometres long with an elevation gain of 130 metres. You can compare the circular routes by distance and elevation gain.

The Zbojnícke studničky educational trail has a different focus, connecting springs, water structures and a wetland. The route runs from the Tajch reservoir via Šarvíz to Kohútovo. Nine themed stops cover springs, the water cycle and the importance of the forest. The trail can be walked in either direction, is accessible year-round and is rated easy. The approximately ten-kilometre route is estimated to take about two and a half hours.

The Zvonička educational trail passes through Zvonička, Červená skala, Havrania skala, Háj and Kohútovo. It is 6,233 metres long and has an elevation gain of 274 metres. A yellow-marked hiking route leads from Nová Baňa railway station to the trail. These distance and elevation details can help you plan your route.

Views, Water and Activities

The Háj lookout tower has three viewing platforms. From there, the views extend across the Nová Baňa Basin, the ridge of the Pohronský Inovec Mountains and part of the Danubian Lowland. The Tajch reservoir is used for recreation and sport fishing; its leisure facilities include safe access points to the water and a wooden pier on the right bank. The Starohutský Waterfall is about 300 metres north of the settlement of Stará Huta, part of Nová Baňa. Its waterfall drop is five metres high.

For a mountain biking trip, the “Bajkom okolo Novej Bane” loop offers a different scale: it is 39.4 kilometres long, with 1,300 metres of climbing. The route can be ridden in either direction and is rated moderate to difficult in terms of fitness and downhill technical skill. Conditions may vary depending on the state of the trail. In the “Zvonička” via ferrata sector, several rock formations are connected by bridges and via ferrata routes.

The Zvonička recreation area has a children's playground with a swing set and other play equipment, as well as a fire pit. Check the current availability of the playground before your visit.
