Ostrý Grúň offers starting points for hikes, cycling trips, winter activities and visits to places of remembrance. When choosing a hotel, you can first consider which themes you want to shape your trip: trails to the summit of Vtáčnik, a cycling route, the history of the forest railway or the local culture each offer a different focus.

Hiking and trails through the Kľak Valley

Hiking trails to the summit of Vtáčnik often start in Ostrý Grúň; a yellow-marked trail is one of the routes leading up to the summit. Conditions on the trails can vary. Another point of reference for planning is the 32-kilometre Kľakov Valley nature trail, which passes through Ostrý Grúň. The municipalities of Kľak, Ostrý Grúň and Hrabičov laid it out along the route of a disused forest railway. The trail’s length and course are therefore connected with the history of the former railway line.

The season also changes the character of this nature trail: in winter, it also serves as a cross-country ski trail. If you want to include winter activities, you can consider this seasonal use alongside the hiking trails to Vtáčnik. The information about the nature trail’s length and course refers to the same route; the ski trail is its winter use.

Cycling: distance, elevation gain and direction

The blue-marked Ostrý Grúň–Píla cycling route starts at the Chapel of Our Lady. It is 19 kilometres long and has 880 metres of elevation gain. The route is intended for experienced mountain bikers or e-bike riders. Both the distance and elevation gain are therefore relevant when assessing the scale of the ride; the route is expressly intended for more experienced riders.

Another route is listed in the national registry under number 2596: Hrad Revište–Ostrý Grúň–Píla, 31.7 kilometres long. For the cycling route to Revište Castle, start in the village centre. From there, it heads towards Hrabičov and then turns into the Pokutská Valley. These details offer different points of reference for planning: the blue-marked route specifies its starting point, elevation gain and intended rider profile; route 2596 is identified by its total length and the places it passes through.

Local history and culture

The Pomník umučených občanov monument stands in the lower part of Ostrý Grúň. It commemorates the place where residents were murdered on 21 January 1945 and is a national cultural monument. The Ostrý Grúň memorial room is next to the municipal office. It reopened in 2005 in cooperation with the SNP Museum in Banská Bystrica. A sculpture of a mother and child, dating from 1954, also stands in front of the municipal office.

The Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is another part of the village’s architectural heritage: it is a vernacular Classicist building dating from the late 18th century. The Pokuty earth bridge is connected with the history of the former forest railway. It is the best-preserved structure on the “In the Footsteps of the Kľak Valley Forest Railway” nature trail. A plaque on its gable bears the inscription “STAVĚNO 1926” and indicates the year it was built. A religious building and a surviving technical structure thus represent two different ways of exploring local history.

Hand mowing and living traditions

The Ostrogrúnska ostrá kosa was first held on 10 June 2006. The event takes place regularly in the meadows above Ostrý Grúň as part of the Slovak hand-mowing league. The programme includes a short mowing course. Anyone interested in traditional manual work will find a tangible connection here between the village and the practice of hand mowing.

The Vtáčnik singing ensemble was founded in Ostrý Grúň on 5 May 2008. It strives to keep the customs of its ancestors alive, and a folkloric focus is planned. This cultural development adds another perspective on local traditions to the historical places of remembrance.

Nearby

The Pokutský Waterfall is near Ostrý Grúň. It is a protected natural monument in the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area. From the southern edge of the village, a mostly paved road follows the Pokutský stream to the waterfall. This makes the natural attraction a separate excursion option alongside the trails to Vtáčnik and the cycling routes.
