Two themes give a trip to Voznica a clear focus: cultural history and nature. The municipality’s boundaries encompass designated protected areas, traces of mining, historic settlement sites, and routes for hiking and cycling.

Protected Areas and Landscape

The Štiavnické vrchy Protected Landscape Area extends across the municipality from its southern boundary to the banks of the Hron. The Kojatín Nature Reserve lies in the Richňavská Valley in the eastern part of Voznica. It was designated in 1997, covers 68.63 hectares, and is subject to the fifth level of protection. These details give each protected area its own geographical setting.

The small-scale protected areas of the Štiavnické vrchy Protected Landscape Area feature volcanic landforms, rock formations created by selective weathering, and scree slopes. Their described features also include numerous protected and endangered animal and plant species. A special natural landmark in the Richňavská Valley is the protected giant sequoia near Hájovňa Slavkov. The tree belongs to the species Sequoiadendron giganteum and was planted in 1905.

Hiking Trails, Springs, and Cycling Route

A hiking route connects Sedlo Peciny, the Richnavské jazerá, Banište, Kopanice, and Kojatín with Voznica. After crossing the boundary from Kojatín, a blue-marked hiking trail leads to the former Slavkov forester’s lodge. Smrkáčik also provides a clear landmark: its summit has a tourist shelter and an information board. One route begins beyond Voznica near the Dedičná štôlňa Jozefa II. and leads to the cross-crowned hill of Smrkáčik. Check local signs and trail conditions before setting out.

Gabrielka Spring lies about four kilometres upstream from Voznica in the Richňavská Valley. A wooden shelter with benches stands by the spring and serves as a rest stop for cyclists and hikers. Suchá Voznica Spring is maintained and provides a water source on hikes through the long valley of Suchá Voznica. If you plan to use the water, assess its suitability on site.

Near Voznica, a cycling route runs from Žarnovica through Voznica and Rudno nad Hronom, then continues on a green-marked route towards Rudnianska dolina and Uhliská. It leads to the approximately four-metre-high Rudniansky waterfall. The route can therefore be identified by its named places and destination, without assuming a particular journey time or level of difficulty.

Mining History and Historical Traces

The Dedičná štôlňa Jozefa II. adit opens into the Hron at Voznica. It was built from 1782 to 1878 and, upon completion, was the longest mining work in the world. To this day, it drains the Štiavnica mining district. Its history combines a lengthy construction period with an ongoing drainage function.

Traces of earlier settlement date back even further: archaeological research near Bártová in the Richňavská Valley provides evidence of settlement by people of the Lusatian culture between 1220 and 700 BC. A historical account also dates back to 1075: records from that year identify Voznica as a major economic and transport centre for the surrounding area, with a toll station or Voznica toll system.

A later architectural landmark is the Church of St Catherine of Alexandria in Voznica. It is a late-classical church dating from 1842. If attending a service is important to you, check access arrangements on site.

Folk Culture and Events

The regional folk music competition, Spievam, spievaš, spievame, takes place in Voznica every two years. The Dolinka folk ensemble was founded in Voznica in 1984. At the Voznica pond, the MO SRZ organises fishing competitions for adults and children every year. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, confirm the specific dates locally in advance.

Getting There and Planning Your Trip

The R1 expressway passes through the municipality of Voznica; the nearest access point is in Žarnovica. Check current road conditions and access arrangements before travelling. A reinforced-concrete footbridge has crossed the Hron since 1969, replacing the former ferry. It continues to serve this purpose; check its condition before visiting.

When choosing a destination, consider whether you would prefer to focus on historical landmarks or on natural areas and named trails.
