Ihráč – Natural Monument, Valley and History
Accommodation in Ihráč
Ihráč combines striking landforms with a long history. On its southern edge lies the Ihráčske kamenné more Natural Monument; the Biely potok shapes the valley, above which Chom rises. This offers several options for planning your trip: volcanic rock formations, paths through the valley, and historical traces in the village.
Natural Monument and Volcanic Landscape
The Ihráčske kamenné more is designated as a natural monument. It covers 2.2 hectares and lies on the southern edge of Ihráč. The area contains a crumbling volcanic vent, which represents the remains of a natural lava channel. The geology is predominantly andesitic and dates back to Tertiary volcanism. Andesite and lava channel refer to different aspects: the rock composition and the formation’s origin.
The route starts along the path to the church, passes the football pitch, and then turns right onto a grassy trail. Check local conditions before your visit and before planning to take the route.
Valley, Trails and Cycling Route
The Biely potok flows through the valley where Ihráč is located. Below Ihráč, the same watercourse is called Ihráčsky potok. Chom rises above the valley and reaches an elevation of 1,012 metres. The name of the watercourse changes below the village, while the mountain provides a separate elevation reference for the landscape.
The Prieboj–Železné vráta rock formation lies about 2 kilometres above Ihráč in the valley of the Biely potok. If you continue farther up the valley, you will reach a narrow rocky gorge after about 10 minutes. It was formed by volcanic activity in the Kremnica Mountains. The first figure describes the approximate location of the rock formation; the second gives the walking time to the gorge. These approximate figures therefore refer to different destinations and measurements.
The Pohronsko - kremnický cyklookruh cycling loop also passes through Ihráč. The entire loop is 49 kilometres long; this figure does not refer to the section within the village. If you are planning to ride the route, check the current trail and access conditions beforehand, as the surface and access may change.
Church and Local History
The earliest documented written mention of Ihráč dates from 26 February 1388. In the 17th and 18th centuries, charcoal burning was a source of income for some families. Woodworking was also part of the traditional way of life; many families made their living from working in the forest. The Church of Christ the King in Ihráč was built in 1938. The village’s history therefore encompasses both early written records and later accounts of work and religious life.
Traditional foods also offer a glimpse into the way of life in earlier times. Common dishes included bread, cabbage soup, barley soup, cooked beans, Trhance and Halušky; potatoes were added later.
Leisure Facility with Seasonal Swimming
The municipality has a leisure facility with an artificial pool, 4 kilometres from Ihráč. During the summer months, swimming and relaxation in natural surroundings are possible there. As swimming is seasonal and availability may change, check the conditions for your dates before visiting. Motor vehicle access is prohibited, except for visitors who have rented the leisure facility.
