Kremnica can be explored through a range of themes: medieval castle architecture, the history of coin minting and mining, historic routes and cultural events. If you are looking for hotels in Kremnica, these themes can help shape your plans for your stay—for example, by focusing on architectural history, visiting a museum or spending time outdoors. Each attraction and activity offers its own way to discover the town and its history.

Castle, Church and Historic Town Walls

Kremnica Castle is a national cultural monument. It includes buildings dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, protected by a double wall. At the heart of the castle stands the Gothic Church of St. Catherine. Dedicated to the town’s patron saint, it has a Neo-Gothic interior. The church is also the setting each year for the Kremnický hradný organ European Organ Festival—an occasion that brings historic architecture and organ music together.

The fortifications are part of the townscape beyond the castle grounds, too: a stone wall surrounds the historic centre, connects to the castle’s fortifications and is 5 to 7 metres high in places. Those interested in Kremnica’s architectural development can consider the castle walls and the town fortifications as two described parts of its historic defensive system. The historic walking route leads through the heart of the old centre, offering another way to explore the town’s history.

Inside the castle, the Small Tower houses the exhibition “Kremnické zvony a zvonolejári.” It explores Kremnica’s bells and bell founders, and recordings of local bells complement the exhibition. The castle’s former town hall now also houses the “Barokové plastiky” exhibition of Baroque sculptures.

Coins, Collections and Mining History

The Kremnica Mint received the right to mint coins in 1328 and is one of the world’s oldest continuously operating businesses. Its exhibition includes a tour of the historic minting workshop. Visitors can mint a token themselves using a historic coining press, known as a balance press; this option may depend on operating conditions.

The exhibition in the Burgher’s House features 138 painted shooting targets dating from 1837 to 1896. The collection is considered the third-largest of its kind in Slovakia; the way the exhibition is presented may change. Another collection to visit is the Múzeum gýča, with more than 4,000 exhibits. Visitor groups can take special guided tours of the collection. For groups, these tours offer a dedicated way to explore the exhibits with a guide.

The Mining Museum in the Andrej adit gives visitors access to part of Kremnica’s underground mine workings. On the tour, visitors pass workplaces from different periods and eventually reach a depiction of the 16th century. Visitor regulations may change, so check the visiting conditions before travelling. This underground museum visit is distinct from the “Po stopách baníckej činnosti” route: this easy walk passes through former gold and silver mining areas and combines nature with Kremnica’s mining history.

Routes, Views and Seasonal Experiences

Kremnica’s Calvary comprises 14 Stations of the Cross chapels and the Church of the Holy Cross. This landscape complex, shaped by its architecture, covers 10 hectares and is used as a place for recreation and relaxation. The climb forms part of an educational trail that leads to a lookout tower. In favourable weather, views from there extend to Kremnický Štós, Skalka, Kremnické Bane, Jarabica and Sitno in the Štiavnica Mountains. Visibility depends on the weather.

Another seasonal option nearby is Skalka arena, which offers more than 5 kilometres of downhill runs and almost 60 kilometres of cross-country ski trails. Operating conditions vary by season. In late summer, the Kremnické Gagy festival is a special highlight. This international festival of humour and satire has been held in Kremnica since 1981, on the last weekend of August. In the town centre, theatre, music, puppetry, visual arts, mime, clowning, recitation and street arts from Slovakia and many European countries are presented on more than ten stages and platforms. The programme changes with each edition.

A local confectionery speciality is another possible theme for a stay: at the historic Atkáryho kremnické krumple workshop, you can buy and taste the speciality and watch it being made. Opening arrangements may change, so it is advisable to check them before visiting. You can choose activities according to whether you are especially interested in Kremnica’s buildings and collections, mining, the landscape or a particular event date.
