Sklené Teplice lies in the northwestern part of the Štiavnické vrchy, in the valley of the Teplá stream. Thermal springs shape the character of the town: there are 14 springs in total, with water temperatures ranging from 28 to 53 °C. The history of the spa town is also closely linked to its thermal water—alkaline gypsum mineral springs and a cave bath were already known here in the 16th century.

Thermal Water and Baths

Parenica is a naturally formed cave steam bath. Its hyperthermal water is 42 °C and comes directly from a thermal spring. The bath is considered unique in Slovakia and Europe. Kúpeľ Márie Terézie offers a different experience: the thermal pool is designed in an antique style and has a stained-glass section in the roof. Banský kúpeľ features a replica of Botticelli’s fresco “The Birth of Venus.”

The Termálne kúpalisko Sklené Teplice thermal bathing complex includes a children’s pool with water at 32 °C. Pool details may vary by season, so check the latest information before your visit. Another geological feature can be found in a room in one of the spa buildings: a 42 °C spring rises there, forming a reddish travertine waterfall.

Spa Park and Local History

The spa park stretches along the valley and gradually gives way to a forest park. It offers easy walks in pleasant surroundings. Quiet areas with benches and gazebos invite visitors to linger; a small lake lies behind the Goethe spa house. Visitors can sample medicinal mineral springs in the park. If you plan to do so, confirm before your trip that they are available on site.

The buildings also tell the story of the spa. The Kursalon was built between 1837 and 1839 as a Neoclassical spa pavilion with a circular floor plan. The historic Kursalon Café serves coffee, soft drinks and cakes from its in-house bakery. Kúpele Sklené Teplice is one of Slovakia’s oldest health spas.

The Neoclassical Church of St. Luke was built between 1807 and 1811. Above Sklené Teplice, the hills are home to the remains of 14th-century Teplica Castle. The town’s history also includes the amalgamation works that Ignác Anton von Born established in Sklené Teplice.

Hiking and Getting Around

A hiking trail to Teplica Castle starts in Sklené Teplice, following yellow markings before joining the green-marked trail to the ruins. The hike is described as a moderately difficult route of about 4.7 kilometres, taking approximately two hours.
