Banska Stiavnica combines a preserved historic town center with a rich mining and fortress history. The center is hilly, but its main sights can be explored on foot. When choosing your hotel, consider whether you mainly want to explore the town’s history and museums, or also set aside time for trails and scenery. The following places and routes offer concrete pointers for planning your trip.

Historic Center and Fortresses

The preserved historic town center dates back to the 16th century and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage property “Historic Town of Banská Štiavnica and the Technical Monuments in its Vicinity.” At Starý zámok, different architectural and artistic styles come together: the complex combines a Romanesque basilica, Gothic elements, a Renaissance fortress, and Baroque art. It is also home to the archaeological exhibition “Baníci prichádzajú…”

Nový zámok offers a different historical focus. The Renaissance fortress was built between 1564 and 1571 to defend against the Ottomans and also served as a watchtower. Its exhibition explores the military situation and the armaments of fortresses built against the Ottomans. It also covers weapons used by the Hungarian and Turkish armies, as well as painted shooting targets. A visit to these different sites lets you explore architectural and military history.

Mining History Above and Below Ground

At Banské múzeum v prírode, you can visit original mine workings. The museum is about 1 km from the town center, below Tajch Klinger, one of the water reservoirs closest to the center. Its exhibits trace the development of ore mining in Central Europe from the Middle Ages to the end of the 20th century. The underground exhibition includes a horse-powered Gápel: the only preserved cable-winding machine of this type used for a mine hoist in Slovakia.

Dedičná štôlňa Glanzenberg also brings mining history to life. The accessible section is 500 m long and reaches a depth of 32 m; check current access conditions before visiting. The mine also contains a commemorative plaque relating to Emperor Francis Stephen of Lorraine’s visit in 1751. At the historic Kammerhof, you can follow the development of Slovak mining, from archaeological finds to modern technologies. The exhibition on mining work spans the period from the oldest finds to the 20th century.

Calvary, Scenery, and Educational Trails

The Calvary of Banská Štiavnica is a Baroque sacred complex connected to its natural surroundings. The landscape is also associated with the UNESCO World Heritage property to which Banska Stiavnica belongs: the Štiavnické Vrchy Protected Landscape Area safeguards the natural surroundings and, under Act No. 543/2002 Coll., forms a 62,128 ha buffer zone.

The educational trails offer different routes and starting points for walks and hikes. The easy Milan Kapusta educational trail along the Terézia ore vein is 6.1 km long and starts at Červená studňa Saddle. It passes Tajch Ottergrund and offers views of Banska Stiavnica and its distinctive buildings. From Trinity Square, you can reach the starting point on foot via a green-marked route: about 45 minutes for roughly 1.5 km. These figures refer to the walk to the trailhead, not the duration of the educational trail.

The Kysihýbel educational trail is also easy and 6.5 km long. Its starting point is about 400 m beyond the town sign at the end of Banska Stiavnica. Along the way, the route leads to the Feismantel Garden and passes a red rhyolite quarry and an underground andesite quarry. The two routes can be distinguished by their lengths and starting points: Milan Kapusta starts at Červená studňa Saddle, while Kysihýbel starts at the edge of town.
