Svätý Anton: Manor House, Park and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Svätý Anton
Svätý Anton combines a manor house with a baroque-style park landscape, sacred buildings, a museum, and a marked cycling route to Sitno. This offers different ways to plan your trip: cultural monuments and their furnishings, or a ride to the highest peak of the Štiavnické vrchy. The museum is located in the heart of this mountain region, on the boundary between Sitnianska vrchovina to the west and Skalka to the east.
Manor House and Park
The manor house was built in 1744 on the site of an older castle. The castle had been built for Andrej Koháry, head of the Hont County administration and an imperial general. Since 1985, the manor house and the adjoining park have been national cultural monuments; both are open to the public. The building and garden thus form the focus as related, protected cultural monuments.
The park is a baroque landscape park with landscaped terraces, flower beds, shrubs, valuable trees, artificial ponds, and a grotto. It then gives way to a freely designed woodland park. The grounds therefore combine clearly structured garden features with a transition to a more freely laid-out park landscape. Visitors interested in historic grounds will find not only the manor house here, but also different forms of garden design within the park.
Church and Chapel
The single-nave Church of Saint Anthony the Hermit was built in 1755. Its furnishings include a wooden Madonna and a panel painting of the Nativity, attributed to Master MS. The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk was built between 1755 and 1758 and is a baroque structure. Its features include a decorative rococo grille and the Koháry family coat of arms.
The buildings can be distinguished by their different features: the church is notable for its single-nave layout and two works of art, while the chapel is characterized by its baroque form, rococo grille, and family coat of arms. The dates also provide a clear timeframe: the church dates to 1755, while the chapel is stated to have taken three years to build.
Museum and Hunting Exhibition
The museum’s location in the heart of the Štiavnické vrchy is defined by two named landscape areas: Sitnianska vrchovina lies to the west and Skalka to the east. The Poľovnícka expozícia features animal dioramas, a hunting room, and hunting weapons. Other topics include falconry and fishing. The exhibition thus encompasses both specific objects and various areas relating to hunting and nature.
Cycling Route and Event History
A marked cycling route leads from Svätý Anton to Sitno, the highest peak of the Štiavnické vrchy, via existing asphalt roads. The route’s total elevation gain is 573 metres. Its destination and elevation gain give you specific details to help assess a cycling trip. Check the route conditions before setting out.
Dni sv. Huberta is a nationwide Slovak hunting celebration featuring historical re-enactments. The 34th edition took place over two days in September 2026 at the historic manor house grounds. The event combines hunting themes with the history of the manor house grounds. The options for choosing between culture and cycling are clearly distinct: the manor house, park, church, and chapel define the cultural side, while the route to Sitno offers a specific cycling option.
