Bystrianska Cave combines a national natural monument with a clearly defined visitor route: it is 580 metres long and takes 45 minutes. Along the way, it passes three chasms, each about 20 metres deep. The cave is a national natural monument developed for visitors by the Slovak Caves Administration, in Brezno District. Check the Caves Administration’s latest visitor information before your visit.

Underground Dimensions and Protected Nature

The surveyed underground labyrinth of Jaskyňa mŕtvych netopierov is on a different scale: it is 19,885 metres long and 324 metres deep. Together with the visitor route at Bystrianska Cave, these dimensions give an impression of how differently the cave landscape can be explored—through a specific visitor route in one case, and the dimensions of a surveyed underground area in the other.

Protected habitats also shape the landscape above ground. Breznianska Skalka is a nature reserve in the cadastral area of Brezno, within the buffer zone of the Low Tatras National Park. The stand of sessile oaks preserved there is considered a unique botanical, dendrological and phytogeographical feature of the region. Horné lazy, in turn, protects a forest-steppe and its associated plant and animal species.

Dobročský prales is a national nature reserve with the highest, fifth level of protection. It is open to the general public only with a guide booked in advance. Bear this clear visiting requirement in mind when planning to include the primeval forest in your trip.

Forest History and Regional Culture

The Forest Time Trail runs through the grounds of the Forestry Open-Air Museum in the Vydrovo Valley. Its themes range from the forest as an ecosystem and the history of human use of forests to the development of forestry in Slovakia. The trail thus connects knowledge of nature with the changing nature of work in the forest.

The Čiernohronská Forest Railway offers another perspective on forestry history. The foundation stone for this narrow-gauge railway was laid in 1909; its fleet includes several steam and diesel locomotives as well as historic open-sided carriages. From the central station in Čierny Balog, the railway runs in three directions: to Vydrovo, Dobroč and Šánske. For your day’s planning, it is a good idea to check the current timetable.

The Museum of Horehronie in Brezno is now housed in two buildings right on the town square. One of them is the house of a master indigo printer, with a wooden textile press. The museum complex thus brings together several tangible connections to crafts and regional culture, while the historic railway focuses on forestry and its technological history.

Activities on Rails, in Sport and in Tradition

For a more active experience, the Horehronské cyklodreziny offer an unusual way to travel by rail: these lightweight vehicles are pedal-powered and run on tracks with a gauge of 760 millimetres. The route follows the Čiernohronská Railway line between Hronec and the Šánske siding and back.

In Mýto pod Ďumbierom, the ski resort offers groomed runs for beginners and more experienced skiers, a chairlift and five drag lifts. In summer, it becomes a bike park, with bicycle and e-bike rental, servicing and an MTB school. The seasonal activities differ considerably: in winter, the focus is on downhill runs and lifts; in summer, on cycling and related services.

The National Biathlon Centre in Osrblie offers year-round training facilities for competitive athletes, amateurs and the wider sporting public. The centre has also hosted the World Championships in Rollski Biathlon. It was confirmed as the venue for the 2024 Open European Championships. At the Tále educational trail, interactive features and information panels about the nature of the Low Tatras offer another way to engage with the landscape.

Organised rafting on the Hron includes boats, paddles and equipment, transport for boats and people, and secure parking. At Salaš Zbojská, visitors can join the Bača and the shepherds in caring for sheep and other animals, as well as making cheese and Oštiepky. Traditional Slovak cuisine is also served there, with a focus on mutton and lamb.

Brezno District is part of the wider Horehronie travel region. This landscape is characterised by typical villages along the upper course of the Hron. The destinations described range from nature reserves and caves to forestry history, museums, sport and regional cuisine—a variety to keep in mind when choosing experiences for your stay.
