Dolný Badín: Valley Paths, Forest and Church History
Accommodation in Dolný Badín
Dolný Badín lies in a basin framed to the north by the Javorie, to the east and south by the Cerovské hory and the Čabradské hory, and to the west by the Štiavnicke vrchy and the Krupinské vrchy. This setting describes the landscape around the village; valleys and paths provide specific focal points for a stay. If you would like to explore the surroundings on foot or by bike, the Badínska Valley and the Uňatín-Horný Badín-Čabraď nature trail are of particular interest.
Landscape and Village Character
The Badínska Valley lies west of Dolný Badín and offers opportunities for hiking as well as more challenging cycling. The steep slopes of the Krupinica and Jalšovík valleys are covered by continuous oak forest. Dolný Badín and its surroundings have numerous fruit trees; distinctive, spreading lime trees stand around the church and cemetery. This lets you take in the landscape from different perspectives: across the wooded valley slopes and among the trees that help shape the village’s character.
Hiking the Nature Trail
The Uňatín-Horný Badín-Čabraď nature trail runs through the municipality of Dolný Badín. It is 13.3 km long in total, of which 2.6 km pass through the municipality. The two figures therefore refer to different sections: the total length of the nature trail and the portion within Dolný Badín. Along the way, hikers can see a spring, Žabinec and viewpoints. If you plan to follow the trail, check local trail conditions before setting out.
Nature and Routes to the Castle
The Čabradský hradný vrch castle hill and its surroundings form a national nature reserve. It is known for Slovakia’s particularly rich diversity of reptiles; many grass snakes live there in particular. You can drive to the nearby Čabraď Castle as far as the hamlet of Konské, then walk for about 45 minutes. From Čabradský Vrbovok, a dirt track leads to the castle on foot in approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. These times are estimates; check current trail conditions before your visit.
Getting Around the Village
A state road runs through Dolný Badín and splits beyond the village in the directions of Drienovo and Selce. For your specific journey, check current navigation. The road layout provides general guidance, while your route planning can be tailored to the particular journey.
Local History and the Church
Archaeological finds show that people lived in the area of present-day Dolný Badín as early as the Stone Age. The settlement was first mentioned in writing in 1135; at that time, it was called Badun. The early settlement and the written mention therefore belong to different periods of the village’s history.
The Church of St. Michael the Archangel (“sv. Michala archanjela”) was originally Gothic. It was renovated in 1754, received a Baroque vault in 1781, and was completely rebuilt after 1876. The furnishings also reflect different styles and periods: the main altar is Neo-Romanesque and dates from around 1900, while the Baroque pulpit is dated 1754. If you are interested in architectural history, you can trace several successive building alterations here.
Folklore and Tradition
A local folklore group performs at local and regional level. Group members preserved the original costume from Badín, known as the “krekáčsky” kroj. The performances and costume add a local cultural tradition to the archaeological and architectural traces.
