When choosing a destination, Žibritov offers a range of attractions: trails through the Bebrava Valley, historic buildings, vineyards and geological features. Cycling routes and a recurring summer festival are also part of the village’s character. Which themes shape your stay depends on whether you prefer to explore on foot, by bike or with an interest in village history.

Hiking between the village and the valley

The “Žibritovský náučný chodník” nature trail starts at the tourist trail junction in Žibritov and leads downhill through the Bebrava Valley to Štangarígeľ. This clearly identifies the starting point, direction and destination for planning your walk. If you want to plan the entire route, however, bear in mind the reported summer restriction: a 2019 guide says that the trail was not passable along its full length because of fenced pastures beyond Station 2. Check the situation locally before setting out.

Another hiking option is the blue-marked trail from Žibritov to the monument to forester Ing. Albert Macko, below Buzalkový vrch. The route is 1.6 km long and has an elevation gain of 160 m. The monument commemorates Macko, who lived from 1951 to 2010. The distance and elevation gain provide concrete points of reference if you include this route in your plans.

Cycling routes and a short break

Among the signposted cycling routes is the yellow-marked Sv. Anton–Žibritov route. Check locally whether the yellow markings are still up to date. Another cycling route runs for 27.6 km from Krupina via Štangarígeľ to Žibritov. It follows mainly paved forest roads marked with green cycling signs.

A small pond near Žibritov is also a useful landmark for visitors: it is suitable for a short break. This makes it possible to consider the longer routes and a potential stop as separate parts of your day’s plans.

Village architecture and building history

Žibritov has preserved an ensemble of traditional, one-storey masonry houses. The buildings have several rooms and a rectangular floor plan; several of them are protected monuments. The ensemble offers a tangible glimpse of the village’s traditional architectural style.

Other historic buildings include a surviving cylindrical bastion. It is a remnant of the fortified medieval Church of St. Ladislaus and was later used as a bell tower. The village’s Evangelical church is a Neoclassical building dating from 1838; its tower was built later. It is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.

Žibritov is also connected with film history: exterior shots for the first Slovak-Hungarian co-production film, “Dáždnik svätého Petra,” were filmed in the village and its surroundings in 1958.

Vineyards, rock formations and festival tradition

Cultivated vineyards lie on the southern slope of Veinperg, also known as Viničný vrch, above the valley of the Bebrava stream. The vines grow at an altitude of 460 to 485 m, and their roots are more than 70 years old. Viticulture and elevation thus shape another aspect of the area around Žibritov.

The protected natural monument Sixova stráň lies nearby, close to Krupinské bralce. The rock formation displays rare columnar jointing in pyroxene andesite: the columns are pentagonal or hexagonal, and their upper sections curve into hooks.

The regularly held folk festival “Podsitnianske dni hojnosti” is associated with Žibritov and the month of July. The summer festival takes place in Baďan, Prenčov, Žibritov or Kráľovce-Krnišov. The festival includes traditional craft demonstrations and regional specialities, including oven-baked homemade bread, yeast cakes, lokše and wild boar goulash. Check the specific date and venue before your trip.
