Hontianske Tesáre combines a striking natural landscape with geological and cultural history. The municipality lies on the southwestern edge of the Krupinská planina; the Štiavnica stream flows through its territory. The international E77 highway also runs through the municipality, connecting Budapest with Warsaw. The landscape, rock formations, and historic buildings are therefore central to planning your trip.

Nature and Geology in Hontianske Tesáre

The rare and endangered spring pheasant’s eye (Adonis vernalis) is protected in the Šinkov salaš nature reserve. A population of several thousand plants grows on formerly mown mountain meadows and along the edges of oak forests. The area is subject to the fifth level of nature protection. The plant and its habitat give the protected area a distinct botanical character.

Another natural feature is the Tesárska Gorge, a short canyon in predominantly volcanic sediments originating from the Štiavnica stratovolcano. Its cross-bedding documents the chaotic sedimentation typical of river deltas and suggests that the area was once a shallow sea. The gorge can therefore be understood not only as a rock formation, but also as a geological clue to the landscape’s past.

There are four waterfalls in the Tesárska Gorge; the third one upstream is about eight metres high. The waterfalls are especially visible in spring during the snowmelt. Another geological site lies in the cadastral area of Dvorníky, where water erosion exposes layers of marine sediments. The fine-grained sandstone layers contain numerous fossils.

Trails and Views

The Hontianske Tesáre observation tower is open to visitors. From there, you can see Hontianske Tesáre and the wider Hont region. A marked trail leads from the municipal office to the tower over a distance of about 1.5 kilometres: first along a paved road, then along a dirt track. When planning your visit, bear in mind the approximately 1.5-kilometre route and the change from paved road to dirt track. It is worth checking the latest information before making a firm plan to visit the tower.

The footpath to the Tesárska Gorge begins at Hontianske Tesáre railway station. The route along the railway line to the gorge is also suitable for bicycles. As local trail conditions may change, check the route before setting out. The information about the trail and observation tower covers different destinations and starting points, so you can plan them separately as part of your day.

Churches, History, and Regional Culture

The ruins of the Romanesque Church of St. Michael stand on a small rise in Patkôš, on the right bank of the Štiavnica, in the cadastral area of Hontianske Tesáre–Dvorníky. The former church dates from the 12th century and fell into ruin in the 19th century. Archaeological investigations have identified Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque building phases. Historically, it was one of the religious buildings along the imperial and royal post road, the Magna Via.

The churches in Šipice also reflect different periods of construction. The Evangelical church there is a Neoclassical building dating from 1801; Šipice also has a freestanding bell tower. The Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was originally Gothic and dates from the second half of the 14th century. It was remodelled in the Baroque style between 1722 and 1728. In Hontianske Tesáre itself, the Evangelical church is a single-nave hall church with a tower dating from the late 18th century; it was remodelled in the Neoclassical style at the end of the 19th century.

Local history also includes notable people and cultural traditions passed down through generations. Karol Braxatoris was an Evangelical pastor in Hontianske Tesáre and is buried there; he was a religious writer and author of hymns. Archaeological finds indicate continuous settlement from the hillfort period through the Middle Ages. The folk costume of Hontianske Tesáre is preserved only in photographs; a coloured engraving by J. Heinbucher-Bikkesy from 1816 depicts the costumes worn by women and girls. Amateur theatre in Dolné Šipice was already active in the 1920s.

Winegrowing as Part of Local History

The winegrowing tradition in Hontianske Tesáre dates back a long way. Stráne in Dvorníky is the municipality’s largest winegrowing area. Dvorníky is also home to numerous cellars carved into the rock, which were used to store wine. The historical record also includes the former custom of pooling wine for the pastor after the grape harvest. This history adds a distinct perspective on the municipality’s work and traditions to its natural and architectural heritage.
