Horné Mladonice lies in the Krupinská výšina, on the right slope of the Vrbovok stream valley. Local history, the Church of Saint Demeter and the landscape appeal to visitors with different interests. When planning your trip, you can consider whether you are particularly interested in architectural history, local chronicles or the geological surroundings.

Location and landscape

The Vrbovok stream flows through the municipality; the village lies on the right slope of its valley. The treeless municipal area is characterized by low ridges of andesitic tuff. At the same time, the entire municipal area consists of Neogene volcanic rocks. The slope and stream describe the village’s location, while the low ridges characterize the terrain. The types of rock add a geological context to this landscape.

Historical traces

The first written record of settlement dates to 1439. By 1463, two villages belonging to the Bzovík estate were already mentioned. The two dates highlight different aspects of history: the first concerns settlement, while the second records two villages under the same estate. In 1935, a large part of Horné Mladonice burned down. Slovak writer, teacher and editor Jozef Cíger Hronský worked in Horné Mladonice from 1914 to 1916; a memorial plaque to him was unveiled in the village. The chronology runs from the medieval records through Hronský’s work to the fire of 1935.

The Church of Saint Demeter

The Church of Saint Demeter was built on older foundations from 1888 to 1890. The single-nave building has a semicircular presbytery, the church’s sanctuary. The construction dates and basic layout offer different clues for understanding the building: the present structure dates from the late 19th century, while its foundations are older. Church service times also vary by season. On the Tuesday of the week of the First Friday, weekday services are held at 17:30 from October to April and at 18:30 from April to October. Sunday Mass begins at 8:00 from October to April and at 7:00 from April to October. If you would like to plan around these times, check the current parish schedule before your trip.
