Kozí Vrbovok: Stream, Water Reservoir and Hontian Architecture

In the center of Kozí Vrbovok, a small bell tower stands at the junction of several streets; the Vrbovok stream flows through the village. The cadastral area also contains a water reservoir. Hontian building and craft traditions add to the picture of Kozí Vrbovok’s landscape and cultural history.

Stream and Water Reservoir

The reservoir is used mainly for recreation by local residents during the summer months. Swimming is at your own risk. An ecological survey conducted from 1999 to 2003 recorded 148 bird species at the reservoir. This figure relates to that period and is not a current population survey.

Hontian Architecture and Craftsmanship

Traditional Hontian architecture consisted of three areas: a living room, a kitchen and a chamber. Houses built in this style had gabled roofs thatched with straw. The three areas describe the interior layout of the house. A gabled roof consists of two sloping roof planes; thatching refers to the roofing material. This distinguishes the layout, roof shape and covering as separate features of the style. In a gabled roof, the two roof planes meet at the ridge.

The craft tradition also has a specific name: women in Kozí Vrbovok were known for making various kinds of Racka lace. Agriculture and winegrowing were also traditional sources of livelihood. The village’s history thus extends from architecture and textile crafts to its former economic foundations.

Customs and Football Tournament

Spiritual culture was closely linked to the church and civic calendar. Local customs included various well-wishes, ritual forms of symbolic striking and the raising of maypoles. The connection to the calendar gave spiritual life a timeframe; the customs refer to specific inherited practices.

The football tournament for the mayor’s cup is held each year in a different municipality. Kozí Vrbovok takes part together with neighboring municipalities, including Jalšovík, Zemiansky Vrbovok and Čekovce. If the tournament is the reason for your trip, check the venue and date in advance.
