Lučenec District offers a wide range of cultural and natural attractions to explore. Cultural stops include the castle, the family crypt, and the Csontváry Museum in Halič; in Lučenec, the museum, synagogue, and city market offer further perspectives. Castles and a distinctive basalt formation add other points of interest. When planning your trip, it helps to first sort out the places and topics that interest you most.

Cultural history in Halič

Halič Castle is a national cultural monument. The Forgách family crypt in Halič is the final resting place of Antal Forgách and Johanna Forgách. Together, a cultural monument and a specific memorial site offer different perspectives on the history of the area: the castle is notable as a protected building, while the crypt is associated with the people buried there.

The Csontváry Museum in Halič presents the life and work of T. K. Csontváry. Its interactive multimedia exhibitions include large-screen projections, touchscreens, a hologram, and a virtual potter’s wheel. The presentation combines biographical and artistic content with digital exhibits and projection elements. Opening hours may vary; check the current exhibition and visitor information before your visit.

Collections and architecture in Lučenec

The Novohrad Museum and Gallery displays folk ceramics from Halič, furniture from Halič Castle, historic glassware from Lučenec, and enamelware from the now-closed enameling works in Lučenec and Fiľakovo. The origins of the objects give the collections different points of reference: the ceramics and furniture relate to Halič, while the glass and enamelware relate to Lučenec and Fiľakovo. The exhibitions thus bring together several histories of materials and production rather than focusing on a single topic.

The restored synagogue in Lučenec is used as a multicultural space and offers visitors expert commentary on the building’s history and restoration. It was the final monumental work by the architect L. Baumhorn. Both the architectural history and the restoration are therefore central. Access arrangements may vary seasonally; check them before your visit.

Castles with different histories

Divín Castle has been a ruin since its destruction by imperial troops in 1679. Zichy Castle in Divín houses several exhibitions about the castle’s owners, hunting trophies, and the history of mining. These topics add their own focus alongside the history of the castle. Confirm that the exhibitions are available before your trip.

At Fiľakovo Castle, pedestrian and vehicle access are different: pedestrians enter from Podhradská Street, while vehicles approach via Baštová Street. Check the route information before your visit. This makes it easier to plan your journey without confusing pedestrian access with vehicle access.

Landscape and everyday life

The Šomoška National Nature Reserve protects a basalt formation with hexagonal columnar jointing, known as the “Stone Waterfall.” This geological attraction is quite different from the buildings and collections at the other cultural stops. The Ružiná Reservoir adds another perspective on nature, serving as a nesting site for many protected waterbird species.

The Lučenec city market offers a glimpse into another aspect of the area: fruit, vegetables, and other agricultural products are sold there. The selection is seasonal, so it is not the same throughout the year. If you would like to combine your stay with a visit to the market, take this seasonal availability into account when planning.
