Hubovo: Church, Bell Tower and Landscape
Accommodation in Hubovo
Hubovo lies at the transition between the eastern edge of the Rimavská kotlina and the eastern part of the Cerová vrchovina, in the valley of a left-bank tributary of the Slaná. The municipality covers 1,082 ha and is surrounded by forests and hills. The Reformed church and a wooden bell tower stand on the church grounds. Other local attractions include the VN Hubovo water reservoir, carp fishing, and the remains of former orchards and vineyards in the surrounding area.
Reformed Church and Wooden Bell Tower
The Reformed church was built in the Classicist style in 1776 and has been renovated. It has a single nave, a rectangular end and no tower. The church grounds are enclosed by a wall. On the masonry porch, the triangular pediment bears the year 1935. These terms refer to different features: “single-nave” describes the basic layout, the rectangular end describes the shape of the church’s east end, and the absence of a tower is another distinctive feature of the building.
The wooden bell tower on the church grounds dates from the 1790s, in other words, the late 18th century, and is a vernacular building with a square floor plan. It was built without a single nail. The lower section has a wooden tent roof, above which are a wooden arcaded upper storey and a slender shingle-covered cupola. While the church stands out for its Classicist, towerless design, the bell tower’s distinctive architectural features are its timber construction and tiered roof. Both buildings are listed as national cultural monuments under number 965.
