Konrádovce: Hiking Trails and Industrial History
Accommodation in Konrádovce
Konrádovce lies in the northern part of the Cerová Highlands, in the valley of a left-bank tributary of the Gortva. The destination is defined above all by its mapped hiking trails and traces of industrial history. The landscape encompasses valleys and hills, as well as buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries. You can therefore tailor your stay to hiking, local history, or both.
Landscape in the Cerová Highlands
The settlement lies below the 514 m-high summit of Veľký Bučoň, in a basin surrounded by 13 quarries. Bučoň Hill is covered in deciduous forest. The landscape description thus extends from the highlands and valley to the wooded hill; the quarries are also part of the basin’s character.
Compare hiking trails by length
Three mapped hiking trails with a total length of 4.5 km are recorded in Konrádovce; the trail network was created by volunteers. A marked 603 m section of the Cesta Márie Széchy 0805 hiking trail is mapped in Konrádovce. The KST-maintained Husiná–Konrádovce hiking trail has a total length of 5.8 km; its section in Konrádovce covers 2.2 km. The Konrádovce–Hodejov railway station hiking trail, also maintained by KST, is 7.4 km long in total. Its section in Konrádovce measures 1.79 km.
The figures refer to different routes: 603 m, 2.2 km, and 1.79 km refer to sections in Konrádovce, while 5.8 km and 7.4 km are the total lengths of the two KST-maintained routes. So do not compare these figures as if they represented the same kind of trail length. Route information may change; check the details before your hike.
Industrial history and architectural heritage
A large basalt quarry began operating in Konrádovce at the end of the 19th century, employing 800 workers. A memorial commemorates workers who lost their lives in the quarry. These two reminders shed light on different aspects of industrial history: the quarry’s operation and the remembrance of those who died there.
The area also bears traces of earlier settlement history: the remains of the former settlement of Šimonfalva, including its cemetery, are located in the Civekfalva area. Konrádovce’s architectural heritage includes a Neoclassical manor house from the mid-19th century and a Secessionist Roman Catholic church built in 1938. These different architectural styles add an architectural perspective to the themes of basalt quarrying and earlier settlement.
