Rimavské Zalužany in the Rimava Valley
Accommodation in Rimavské Zalužany
Rimavské Zalužany lies in the Rimava Valley at an elevation of 255 metres, on the right bank of the Rimava. If you are looking for a hotel in Rimavské Zalužany, these location details provide a clear picture of the landscape: the municipality includes numerous beech and oak forests, and Mount Sinec, at 916 metres, lies to the southwest. The valley, river, forest and mountain offer different geographic reference points for understanding the area.
Landscape and educational trail
The SNP–Battlefield Rimavská Baňa educational trail is about 4.5 kilometres long and passes through the cadastral areas of Rimavská Baňa and neighbouring Rimavské Zalužany. It tells the story of the fighting between Slovak insurgents and German units in late 1944. Its approximate length is a useful guide for planning how much time to allow; terrain conditions may vary. The trail includes a restored, authentic machine-gun bunker on the Hrb hill.
The trail thus offers a concrete way to learn about the history of the fighting, while its route also crosses two cadastral areas. If you are interested in the historical interpretation, both the trail’s theme and the bunker on Hrb provide a factual sense of the route’s focus.
History and buildings
Rimavské Zalužany has a pseudo-Gothic bell tower dating from the second half of the 19th century. A mill was in operation here around the turn of the 19th century. Two lime kilns were also discovered near the village. These points of interest range from a surviving building to former economic activity and archaeological finds.
The memory of the fighting around Hrb hill is also part of the area’s historical heritage. At the reenactment on 14 September 2024, the programme began with memorial ceremonies at the monument to the Slovak National Uprising and the monument to Ján Kutlík; a battle reenactment followed. The date describes that edition and is not an events calendar for future years.
Lesík and events
About 500 metres from the village is Lesík, a site surrounded by nature that hosts cultural and social events. It has been used for these purposes for more than 80 years. Past uses have included dances, summer festivals, theatre performances, sporting events and firefighting competitions. Lesík has an amphitheatre, an area for cooking goulash, an audience area and the covered Žliabok spring. If you are planning a visit, check the current condition of the facilities in advance.
The “Jednou stopou do lesíka” motorcycle rally was held for the seventh time at Lesík in 2022. That edition’s programme included concerts, competitions, a raffle and a commemorative bonfire. These details give an idea of the event format, but do not provide information about a later date or a current programme.
Festivals and culinary traditions
The 2024 edition of the Haluške festival featured a folklore programme, a cooking competition, traditional dishes and local specialities. At Držkobranie 2024, participants prepared whole tripe; a woman, a man and a child from the audience also took part in judging the dishes. The two examples show different elements of a festival programme: folklore and a cooking competition on the one hand, and preparation and audience judging on the other.
The municipal pig-slaughtering event included a sausage-making competition with seven teams. The traditional event was held for the seventh time, and visitors from surrounding villages also attended. The 2025 edition featured, among other things, lung soup, cabbage soup, liver, a regional blood-based speciality and homemade sausages. A selection of traditional pig-slaughtering specialities was also available in 2026.
