Getting There and Finding Your Way Around the Region

For bus travel, regional bus route 475 is a useful reference: on the Fiľakovo–Hajnáčka–Tachty route, it serves the Večelkov, OcÚ and Večelkov stops. A published timetable is listed as applying from 14 December 2025; check the current timetable before travelling.

Večelkov is also on a road connecting most municipalities in the microregion with the regional centres of Rimavská Sobota, Fiľakovo and Lučenec.

Landscape and Natural Environment

The landscape of Večelkov consists mainly of unforested hills, often dissected by erosion gullies. Tertiary rocks and sandstone form the underlying geology. The gullies shape the terrain, while the rocks offer a distinctive insight into its geological structure. Scattered beech forests with oak and black locust trees grow in the western part of the cadastral area.

The cadastral area lies within the Cerová vrchovina Protected Landscape Area, which encompasses rare and valuable biotopes. Večelkov is also one of the Slovak municipalities in the Novohrad-Nógrád UNESCO Global Geopark. These designations add a broader natural context to the landscape itself.

Water Reservoir: Fishing and Summer Activities

A large water reservoir lies within the cadastral area shared by Večelkov, Petrovce and Dubno. The publicly accessible section is used by anglers from across Slovakia and abroad; check local access conditions before travelling. During the summer months, this section serves mainly as a swimming spot for local residents. The uses therefore vary by audience and season: fishing draws visitors from beyond the region, while swimming is mainly a local, seasonal activity.

Petőfi Statue and Local History

A statue of Sándor Petőfi stands in Večelkov. It was created by academic sculptor Július Mag, who was born in Večelkov. For travellers interested in culture, this is a tangible local connection: both the monument and the sculptor’s origins link back to the town.

The town’s history also includes an industrial past. Lignite mines operated in the cadastral area of Večelkov from the mid-19th century. This historical aspect adds another dimension to local history alongside the cultural connection represented by the Petőfi Statue.
