Dolná Strehová offers several distinct themes for your trip: the literary heritage associated with Imre Madách, historic church art, thermal waters and a hilly cadastral area. You can tailor your stay to suit your interests, whether they lie particularly in literary history, architecture, landscape or a cultural event.

Landscape and Thermal Waters

There are thermal mineral springs in the cadastral area of Dolná Strehová. The terrain is hilly, with low, varied ridges composed of Upper Tertiary deposits, some of which are tuffaceous. Oak and black locust trees grow on the steeper slopes. This description covers both the geological formations and the vegetation, helping you understand the landscape beyond its individual buildings.

Strážna hora, which rises to 332 metres, lies on the southern boundary of the cadastral area. The hill offers a good view of the Ipeľ. This viewpoint is a specific reference point in the landscape: alongside the ridges and slopes described above, the view of the river takes centre stage here.

The thermal waters are also a distinct reason to visit. Kupko Strehová Aquatermal has eight thermal-water pools. Water for the pools is supplied from three boreholes and emerges at 36°C. Aquatermal Strehová operates year-round; the outdoor facilities are seasonal. When planning your trip, it is therefore important to distinguish between the year-round operation of the complex and the seasonal availability of its outdoor facilities.

The Legacy of Imre Madách

Imre Madách’s manor house is a late-18th-century building in the Rococo Classicist style. Its exterior and interior are well preserved. The manor house also contains a literary-historical exhibition in eleven rooms, dedicated to Imre Madách and his work The Tragedy of Man. A visit lets you explore both the architecture of the house and the writer and his work as distinct subjects.

The manor house has a visitor centre with a museum education animator, a small stage and a conference room; its facilities may change. Visitor-centre facilities can change over time, so confirm the details that matter for your visit in advance. The Slovak National Museum can arrange step-free access at the ticket office on request. It is best to arrange this before you arrive.

Imre Madách’s grave is in the park next to the manor house. It is therefore closely connected to this literary memorial site, while the exhibition in the house is dedicated to his life and work. Together, these two places reveal different aspects of the Madách legacy: the exhibition focuses on literature, while the grave commemorates the writer.

Church Art and Local Culture

The Evangelical church in Dolná Strehová was built in 1652. Loopholes from its defensive wall can still be seen in the side walls. Inside is a carved wooden Renaissance altarpiece with seven biblical oil paintings. The church thus draws attention to two distinct features: the surviving traces of its fortifications and the religious imagery of the altarpiece.

The Hraný amatérsky humor (HAH) festival began in 1990, while Czechoslovakia still existed. Its programme includes theatre, music, cabaret and stand-up performances, as well as competitive screenings of amateur films. It thus brings together various forms of live entertainment and film screenings. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific event dates.

The Prameň folklore ensemble was founded in 1995. It aims to preserve and pass on the folklore of the Podpoľanie region, influenced by Novohrad culture. The ensemble offers a different perspective on regional culture from the HAH festival: its focus is on passing down a folk tradition.

A football tournament for the mayor’s cup is also organised in Dolná Strehová in summer. If the tournament is important to your travel dates, confirm the specific date in advance. This will help you distinguish between a cultural event and this seasonally organised sporting event when choosing when to travel.
