Horné Plachtince combines a historically shaped village landscape with themed trails through the countryside. The designated conservation area, traditional building styles and traces of local customs give the village’s culture a distinctive place. At the same time, nature trails focus on different subjects: one route explores Pohanský vrch, while another leads to a rock formation in the valley of the Suchánsky potok. When planning your trip, you can therefore explore both architectural history and nature and cultural interpretation.

Conservation area and traditional building styles

The designated conservation area has preserved a plot layout to this day, as shown in map records from the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The historic village landscape can therefore be viewed through more than just individual buildings: its preserved property boundaries are also part of its character. Those interested in settlement history will find a connection here between the village’s layout and maps from two successive periods.

The protected part of Horné Plachtince is home to stone houses with a distinctive roofing history. Their roofs were originally thatched and supported by wooden or masonry pillars. Both the stone masonry and the former roof construction are therefore part of the building tradition preserved in these houses. The two folk houses at house numbers 57 and 74 are listed under monument numbers 1682 and 11240.

Another historic building is the wooden bell tower behind the municipal office, which dates from 1737. The interior furnishings of the Evangelical church date from the time the church building was constructed; a bell associated with the church bears the date September 9, 1737. These details concern different features: the bell tower’s location and date of origin on the one hand, and the church’s interior furnishings and the date on its bell on the other.

Customs and cultural events

Bažalička is dedicated to preserving family and seasonal customs in eastern Hont, particularly in Príbelce and Plachtince. The Bažalička folklore group performs songs and dances at cultural events in Horné Plachtince and the surrounding area. Cultural interest therefore extends beyond historic buildings: alongside the conservation area and church heritage, local themes also include traditional customs and folk performances.

Nature trails at Pohanský vrch and in the valley

The Pohanský vrch nature trail starts near Horné Plachtince, above the confluence of the Suchánsky potok and the Plachtinský potok. It follows the slopes of the southern spur of Pohanský vrch, loops around its summit and returns to the starting point. The circular route is 3.6 kilometres long, with an elevation difference of 260 metres. The trail is self-guided and circular, and can be walked in either direction; check locally before setting out for information on year-round access and availability. Its interpretation covers natural sciences, geology, palaeontology and cultural history. Pohanský vrch is also classified as a locality of gene-pool significance for flora and fauna.

Another nature trail leads through the valley of the Suchánsky potok to Trúbiaci kameň. The rock formation has two openings through which air currents produce a whistling sound. The two trails have different focuses: the Pohanský vrch nature trail combines several fields of knowledge with a loop around the summit, while the route to Trúbiaci kameň centres on the rock formation and its characteristic whistle.

Plan for access and conditions

To reach the Pohanský vrch nature trail, take the bus to Horné Plachtince; from there, the route continues on foot for 1.7 kilometres along a local road north into the valley of the Plachtinský potok. Check this access information before setting out. As trail conditions may change, it is also a good idea to check the conditions before your visit. This makes it possible to plan historic architecture and the different themes of the nature trails as separate highlights of your trip to Horné Plachtince.
