Veľký Krtíš (Veľký Krtíš) combines urban history and landscape. Cultural sites include an Evangelical church, Kaštieľ Viliama Sebastianiho, the Banícky kombajn monument and the cultural centre. Nearby is Modrý Kameň Castle; within the cadastral area, a flat valley, hilly landscapes and forests meet. When choosing where to stay, you can consider whether you are more interested in architecture, mining history, the landscape or a destination nearby.

Cultural History and Architecture

The Evangelical Church in Veľký Krtíš was founded around 1635 and is a national cultural monument. Its original interior furnishings have not been affected by renovations. Thus, both the church’s long history and the preservation of its interior furnishings are defining aspects of this cultural monument.

Kaštieľ Viliama Sebastianiho was originally built as a manor house for the Ambrózy family and is a Renaissance building dating from the 17th century. The Sebastiani family owned the manor house from 1850. The single-storey block building has a mansard roof and a three-bay entrance portico with Ionic columns. Unlike the church, for which its founding period and interior furnishings are important historical aspects, the manor house can be considered in terms of its original use, ownership history and architectural form.

The Banícky kombajn monument was unveiled on 9 September 2005. It commemorates the development of mining and miners who lost their lives or their health while working in the mines. Thus, alongside architectural history, the memory of the people and the history of mining stand as a subject in their own right.

The Hontiansko-novohradská Library and the Municipal Cultural Centre are located in the cultural centre. A cinema was also established there; historically, it also served as a theatre and concert hall. The cultural centre thus combines institutional culture with its documented former uses for cinema, theatre and concerts.

Valley, Hilly Landscape and Forest

The settlement of Veľký Krtíš developed in a flat valley of the Krtíš stream. In the northern part of the cadastral area, the foothills of the Krupinská planina extend into the lower hills of the Ipeľská kotlina. The northeastern part of the cadastral area is forested with oak, beech and acacia trees. The landscape features can therefore be distinguished by their spatial scale: the valley describes the development of the settlement, while the hills and forest areas concern specific parts of the cadastral area.
