Gelnica District: Mining History, Forests and Technical Monuments
Accommodation in Gelnica District
Gelnica District combines a rich mining heritage with forested landscapes and striking technical monuments. In Gelnica, museum collections and mining sites tell the story of ore extraction; Kluknava is home to a covered wooden bridge, while Margecany lies at the confluence of two rivers and beside the Ružín Reservoir. This offers several ways to plan your trip, with options ranging from industrial history and protected nature to walking and cycling routes.
Mining History in Gelnica
The Banícke múzeum in Gelnica focuses on mining, folklore, local history, geology and guilds. Its collections include miners’ tools, mine lamps, old mining maps and models illustrating ore extraction. Mining workwear and festive clothing are also on display. The exhibits thus cover everything from the technical side of mining to local history and everyday culture.
The Banský skanzen features a historic ore-stamping mill, powered by water from nearby Turzovské jazero, which illustrates ore processing in the 17th century. The štôlňa Jozef mine adit is also part of the history of mining: it opened to the public in August 2016 and became part of the exhibition at the Banícke múzeum in Gelnica. Check current visiting arrangements separately when planning your visit.
The Banský náučný chodník starts at Banícke námestie; the starting point is easy to reach from Gelnica mesto railway station. The educational trail is suitable for all age groups. If you would like to learn about mining history beyond the collections, this route complements a museum visit with an on-site experience of the subject.
Technical Monuments and Buildings
The covered wooden bridge between Kluknava and Štefanská Huta was built over the Hornád in 1832 from larch wood. It is considered the only one of its kind in Slovakia. The bridge is used by local pedestrians and vehicles, although vehicle traffic is restricted; it is also a tourist attraction and a technical monument.
Kluknava is also home to two national cultural monuments: the Baroque castle and the Dom služobníctva. The Múzeum obuvi is located in the Dom služobníctva. Another technical monument is the Bujanovský Tunnel in Rolova Huta. Originally used as a railway tunnel, it connects Rolova Huta with the Kozinec recreational area. The area thus brings together different examples of architectural and technical heritage.
Forests, Protected Areas and Cycling Route
Forests cover 74.6 percent of Gelnica District, the highest proportion in Slovakia. The district’s natural monuments include Margecianska línia and Závadské skalky. Other protected areas include the Kloptaň Nature Reserve and the Poľana Peat Bog Reserve. These names refer to different protected areas within the district; consider them as separate destinations when planning your trip.
Officially marked Cycle Route 021 passes through Gelnica District from Margecany, through the Hnilec Valley, towards the Dedinky recreational area. If you plan to use this cycling route, check the route conditions before setting off.
Riverside Scenery and Quieter Stays
Margecany lies at the confluence of the Hornád and Hnilec rivers, on the left bank of the Ružín Reservoir. In the centre of the village is the well-kept Padlých Park, a memorial park for a short visit, quiet reflection or a peaceful walk.
From Gelnica, Turzov can be reached via a blue-marked hiking trail. Fishing is possible at the Lower Lake in Turzov. In Smolník, on a meadow beyond the village in the direction of Smolnícka Huta, stands the 18th-century Baroque Chapel of Saint Joseph.
When choosing a hotel in Gelnica District, it may help to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: Gelnica offers a museum and mining educational trail, Kluknava its historic buildings and wooden bridge, and Margecany its riverside and reservoir setting, along with a memorial park.
