Accommodation in Großmichel
Anyone looking for a hotel in Großmichel can tailor their stay to their interests: the Zemplínske múzeum explores the region’s history and culture, while Kerta Park and designated cycling routes put nature in the spotlight. Historic buildings and the Hrádok grounds round out the options. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus more on exhibitions, architecture or outdoor activities.
Museum, archaeology and regional culture
At the Zemplínske múzeum, the permanent Klenotnica exhibition presents art-historical, archaeological and numismatic artefacts in an interactive, modern way. They are connected with the manor house, the Sztáray family and the Zemplín region. The exhibition is housed in the reconstructed central Baroque-Classical manor house, bringing the collection into a historic architectural setting.
Another exhibition is dedicated to the knight Albert of Michalovce, also known as Albert Užský and Albert Viniansky (1380?–1434). It tells the story of his life and times in the oldest medieval rooms of the aristocratic residence. The archaeological exhibition presents significant finds and assemblages in chronological order, covering the prehistoric, protohistoric, early historic and early medieval settlement of the Zemplín region. It is displayed in the basement; the internal layout of the rooms may change.
The ethnographic exhibition broadens the picture of everyday life and regional crafts. Its topics include the pottery of Pozdišovce, the shepherds’ art of southern Zemplín and traditional crafts. It also features traditional ways of living, evidence of folk fishing and folk textiles. If you are interested in different aspects of regional culture, you can explore archaeological collections as well as traditional crafts and ways of life.
Historic buildings and Hrádok
The Rotunda of Michalovce has a circular nave and a horseshoe-shaped apse. It is considered evidence of the establishment of Christianity in the Zemplín region and is one of the city’s oldest cultural and historical monuments. The Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary also has medieval origins; its oldest part dates from the 15th century. The two buildings offer different ways to explore the older history of Michalovce.
The artist Teodor Jozef Mousson lived in a villa on Hrádok from 1931 to 1944; an atelier was later added to its north side. The Mousson House on Hrádok, now home to the Michalovce Observatory, was originally built for members of the Sztáray noble family. The Krajská hvezdáreň is an astronomical centre for the Košice region. Through its science outreach programmes, the Krajská hvezdáreň seeks to bring knowledge of astronomy, spaceflight and the natural sciences to children and adults.
Hrádok is also home to a Neo-Gothic chapel that serves as the Sztáray family crypt. It is considered a free-standing replica of the Gothic Chapel of St Michael in Košice and was completed and consecrated in 1898. Following its revitalisation in 2026, the Hrádok grounds feature an amphitheatre with 400 seats, seating areas, a picnic area, a barbecue area, several children’s play features and walking paths. Since the facilities may change, it is advisable to check their current status before visiting.
Kerta Park and cycling routes
Kerta Nature Park is home to around 60 rare tree and shrub species, including a 370-year-old English oak. Its renovation added 1,920 metres of new paths, a pavilion, an entrance gate and two children’s playground features. These details give the park a character distinct from the exhibitions and historic buildings. Check the current condition of the individual facilities before your visit.
A designated cycling route runs from Michalovce via Zemplínska Široká and Iňačovce to the Senianske rybníky; the return route goes through Senné and Palín to Michalovce. Check route conditions locally so your plans match the current route. Separately, designated cycling routes connect Zemplínska Šírava with Michalovce. The area was added in 1965 to Category B of the list of internationally important areas for the protection of waterbirds in Europe and North Africa. It is of high scientific research value and is the subject of systematic ornithological research.
