Sobrance District: Wetlands, Forests and Culture
Accommodation in Sobrance District
Notable features of Sobrance District include the birdlife of Senianske rybníky, various forest reserves, lakes and unusual museum collections. Nature and culture can be seen in very specific details, from rare plants to an exhibition featuring hundreds of guitars.
Lakes, wetlands and distinctive habitats
A total of 283 bird species have been recorded to date at Senianske rybníky in Sobrance District. This wetland is of great importance for biodiversity and numerous endangered plant and animal species. The number of recorded species may be updated as a result of future surveys.
The nature reserves differ in their habitats and plant life. PR Lysá in Podhoroď and Choňkovce protects rare forest and forest-steppe communities, as well as an isolated occurrence of the many-flowered oak (Quercus polycarpa). The similarly named but separate PR Lysák nature reserve in Remetské Hámre preserves thermophilous beech-oak communities with many-flowered oak and Dalechamp's oak (Quercus dalechampii) at an elevation of 821 m.
In the PR Machnatý vrch nature reserve in Vyšná Rybnica, rare moss communities in acidic beech forests are protected. These include the endangered pipsissewa (Chimaphila umbellata). PR Drieň in Hlivištia, in turn, protects forest and forest-steppe communities on andesite bedrock, where cornelian cherry (Cornus mas) grows in abundance. Geology takes centre stage at the Beňatinský travertín natural monument: it protects Slovakia’s easternmost travertine outcrop, where travertine formation is still ongoing.
Morské oko in Sobrance District is a 13 ha impounded volcanic lake at an elevation of 618 m. Malé Morské oko has a water surface area of 0.33 ha, a depth of 2.4 to 4 m and no surface outflow. Kaštielik Morské oko was built on the shore of Morské oko in 1924 as a place of rest and recreation. From a car park, it can be reached via a blue-marked hiking trail approximately 800 m long. Check route information before your visit, as access details may change.
There are different route lengths to consider when planning a hike: the Morské oko–Sninský kameň section of the educational trail is 4 km long and climbs from 618 to 1,005 m above sea level. The Vtáčím rajom educational trail in Sobrance District is 16 km long and has five observation towers.
Museums, history and regional traditions
The Múzeum Na čiare in Lekárovce documents life along the Slovak-Ukrainian border, as well as the history of smuggling and people smuggling. The basic exhibition area is open to the public; visits must be arranged by phone. A guided tour lasts about 1 hour and 20 minutes. Allow time to arrange your visit by phone and check the latest visitor information in advance.
The Gitarové múzeum in Sobrance features an exhibition of hundreds of guitars and thousands of objects from contemporary history. During interactive guided tours, you can try out many of the instruments on display. As programme details may change, check them when planning a specific visit.
Historically, Sobranecké kúpele are among the oldest spa resorts in Slovakia. Their mineral springs were already mentioned in documents dating from 1336. Five cold springs rise there; they are weakly carbonated, contain hydrogen sulphide, are moderately mineralised and belong to the sodium chloride spring category.
Wine is also part of the region’s history: the Sobranecký wine-growing region has a long tradition of wine production. In Orechová, REGIA TT, s. r. o. produces high-quality varietal and vintage wines that have received awards at various wine exhibitions.
