Markušovce brings together several historical highlights: a church mentioned in medieval records and with a Baroque-influenced interior, a partially preserved castle complex, a manor house with museum exhibitions, and a terraced park. Hiking is another option in the Markušovská dolina valley. If you are looking for a hotel in Markušovce, these highlights can help you plan your trip around your interests.

Church and Castle: Different Layers of History

The church “Kostol sv. Michala archanjela” is mentioned as early as 1280 and was originally late Romanesque. Its predominantly Baroque interior is complemented by the Mariássy family’s tombstones: they date from the 16th and 17th centuries and are made of red marble. Different layers of history meet here: the early mention, its original late Romanesque classification, and later furnishings.

Markušovský hrad Castle was built in 1284 and destroyed in 1527. What remains is a partially preserved, roofed ruin located directly in the village of Markušovce. Its history can thus be viewed through a different timeline from that of the church: construction was followed by destruction, while the ruin preserves part of the complex. Public access conditions may vary; check them before your visit.

Manor House and Museum Exhibitions

František Máriássy had the manor house “Kaštieľ Markušovce” built in the Renaissance style in 1643. Its present appearance dates to a Rococo-style renovation carried out between 1772 and 1780. The building’s construction and later transformation are thus two distinct phases. The museum exhibition in the manor house presents the development and various forms of furniture art and interior design in chronological order, spanning the 17th century to the beginning of the 20th century. Alongside the history of the building, it offers an overview of changes in furniture and interiors.

Letohrádok Dardanely was built in 1777–1778. It houses an exhibition of historical keyboard instruments, and festive concerts are also held there occasionally. If a concert is important to your travel plans, check the specific dates. The manor house and Letohrádok Dardanely are a branch of the Spiš Museum in Spišská Nová Ves. The shared address is Michalská 59, 053 21 Markušovce.

Park, Gothic Route and Hiking

The French Park in Markušovce is arranged across three terraces connected by a stone staircase. Its clear layout differs from the manor house’s interiors and the historical instruments in Letohrádok Dardanely: here, the design is shaped by the terraces and the connections between them. There are opportunities for hiking in the Markušovská dolina valley. This means that, alongside the buildings, exhibitions and park, visitors can also choose an activity in the valley.

Markušovce is part of the Gothic Route. The route features Letohrádok Dardanely, the church “Kostol sv. Michala,” Markušovský hrad Castle and the manor house “Kaštieľ Markušovce.” This designation provides a shared cultural framework for these places, while each retains its own focus, with its individual exhibition themes and building phases.
