Brzotín: Manor Houses, Church and Landscape
Accommodation in Brzotín
Brzotín offers both historic buildings and natural attractions. When looking for a hotel in Brzotín, you can consider whether manor houses and the church, or nature reserves, views and cycling, should be your main focus. The cadastral area extends across two geomorphological units: the Rožňavská kotlina and the Slovenský kras. This classification provides a specific context for the nature-related attractions.
Landscape between the Karst and the River
Brzotínska skala is part of the Brzotínske skaly National Nature Reserve (NPR), established in 1984. The ruins of Hrad Brzotín lie on the wooded slope of the Silická planina rock massif, within the protected area and on the right bank of the Slaná River. A visible moat remains at the ruins. The slope, rock massif, riverbank and moat give the site both a landscape context and a specific feature of the castle ruins.
Brzotínske rybníky are also among the largest standing bodies of water by area in the Slovenský kras. This refers to their size in the regional comparison and adds a named area of water to the nature-related attractions.
Manor Houses and Church
In the centre of Brzotín stands the Mariášiovcov manor house, also known as Biely kaštieľ or Máriássyho kaštieľ. It dates from 1837 and is currently the headquarters of the administration of the Slovenský kras National Park. If you are planning to visit the interior, check access in advance.
Remains of a historic park have been preserved in the grounds of this manor house and supplemented with new plantings. Thus, the building is associated not only with its history and its use as an administrative headquarters, but also with these surviving park remains and their new plantings.
Another manor house in Brzotín is a Baroque building dating from around 1729. The two-storey building consists of two wings and has a prominent central avant-corps, a balcony on the main façade and two side avant-corps. An avant-corps projects from the rest of the façade; the central and two side avant-corps give the building its architectural structure. Its façade design and arrangement of building elements reveal its Baroque character.
The Church of St. Anne (Kostol sv. Anny) was built between 1798 and 1803 and is late Baroque. Its main altar is a Louis XVI-style altar from the late 18th century; it also features a new image of St. Anne from the 20th century. The church is in very good condition and serves its religious purpose. If you would like to visit the interior, check access in advance.
Viewpoint and Cycling Route
The viewpoint at Brzotínska skala has been accessible to tourists since 2017. From there, the view extends southwest into the dramatic canyon of the Slaná River. Trail conditions may vary, so check them before your visit.
A blue cycling route also passes through Brzotín, allowing you to explore the surrounding natural and cultural attractions by bike. Check the route markings and signage before setting off. This gives you two different options for planning your visit: a specific viewpoint as a destination, or the broader focus of the cycling route on the surrounding natural and cultural attractions.
