Krásnohorské Podhradie combines cultural history with opportunities for a walking or cycling tour. The Andrássy Mausoleum is a museum open to the public and part of the exhibition of the Slovak National Museum – Múzeum Betliar. Inside, with its lavish furnishings, you can learn more about the lives of Dionýz and Františka Andrássy. The range of themes helps you shape your stay around your own interests: architecture and family history are in focus, alongside historic buildings and outdoor activities.

The Andrássy Mausoleum: Museum and Architecture

The small funerary complex was built in 1903–1904 in the Art Nouveau and Neoclassical styles. It was constructed from white Carrara marble imported from Italy. Several aspects come together when you explore it: its special function as a funerary complex, its two architectural styles and the material used. The mausoleum is located directly on the E58/E571 main road on the Rožňava–Košice route. Opposite are a ticket booth and a small temporary parking area. Check the latest visitor information before your visit.

Krásna Hôrka Castle and Historical Connections

Krásna Hôrka Castle was originally built as a medieval fortification. Its history as a museum began after 1857: Count Juraj Andrássy established a family museum using surviving furniture, weapons and armor. The collections were opened to visitors in 1867. The museum’s history thus extends from its establishment in the 19th century back to the medieval origins of the castle complex.

As of 26 August 2026, the castle was closed to the public due to ongoing reconstruction. Check current access information before your trip. This timing is especially important for planning if you would like to include a visit to the castle in your trip.

Gallery, Architectural Forms and Local History

Another architectural point of interest is the Andrássy Picture Gallery (Andrássyovská obrazáreň). The building was constructed in 1908 in the Art Nouveau style and has served its original purpose as a picture gallery again since 1990. Its floor plan is shaped like a Greek cross. This description adds a second perspective to the stylistic designation: besides the design of the façade and the building, you can also consider its ground plan.

A church in the municipality of Krásnohorské Podhradie is also mentioned as early as 1332–1337. This takes the view of local history back to the 14th century. Together with the history of the castle and the later-built gallery, this offers several points of reference across time, without limiting your interest to a single building.

Hiking and Cycling

One documented example of a hiking event is the traditional Valentine’s ascent beneath Čipkov vrch. The eleventh edition took place on 17 February 2024; for that edition, the start and finish were once again at the cultural center. The date and edition refer to this specific event, not to the date of a future event. If you are interested in another edition, check its latest announcement.

A longer cycling tour also passes through Krásnohorské Podhradie: the 54.5-kilometer cycling tour around Zádiel runs through the village between Drnava and Rožňava. The distance refers to the entire tour. For planning purposes, the total distance is therefore the relevant guide, not just the section through the village. Routes and conditions may change; check the current markings and conditions before setting out.

When choosing your trip, you can distinguish between several areas of interest: the mausoleum offers a museum visit and insights into the history of the Andrássy family, while the gallery and the castle highlight other aspects of architectural and museum history. The hiking event is associated with a specific historical date; the cycling tour is described as a longer route with a stated total distance. This lets you include culture and outdoor activity in your plans according to your interests.
