If you are considering Rožňava as a place to stay and are interested in historic architecture or mining history, you will find several specific cultural highlights. The historic centre, the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the watchtower, the Mining Museum and the Calvary represent different aspects of the city. This makes it easier to plan your trip around what interests you most: the urban landscape, sacred architecture, industrial history or a walk.

Historic Centre and the Gothic Route

The historic centre consists of a spacious square and several adjoining streets. The square is considered the largest of its kind in Slovakia. The centre’s present layout took shape around the end of the 15th century. As one of the centres of the Gothic Route in Gemer, Rožňava is also part of a regional cultural heritage context. This combination of the city’s layout and its regional setting offers a way to explore the town’s history.

Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a medieval Gothic church dating from the late 13th century; its construction was completed in 1304. It is considered the city’s oldest and most valuable cultural monument. The cathedral also houses a panel painting regarded as the oldest depiction of mining on an altarpiece in Central Europe. Gothic architecture and an art-historical connection to mining history thus come together in one building. If you are interested in both subjects, the cathedral offers a clear cultural focus.

Mining and metallurgy at the museum

The Mining Museum in Rožňava is a regional-history district museum specialising in mining and metallurgy in Gemer. It has five separate permanent exhibition areas. Topics include mining and metallurgy in Gemer, the age of steam, mining workplaces, and the natural environment of the Slovak Karst and neighbouring areas. The courtyard features mining machinery and a mine railway. Unlike the cathedral and the watchtower, the museum focuses on industrial history and other regional themes.

Watchtower: Renaissance architecture and views

Rožňava’s watchtower is a Renaissance tower built between 1643 and 1654. From its gallery, you can see all the monuments in the historic centre, the Calvary, the city and the Rožňava Basin. You can visit the watchtower without a guided tour during the tourist information office’s opening hours. As opening hours may change, check whether a visit is possible before making plans.

The Calvary and a walk

The Calvary of Rožňava is one of Slovakia’s oldest Calvary complexes and is also the oldest monument of its kind in the Gemer region. A walk from Rožňava Town Hall on Miners’ Square to the Calvary is considered easy. It is less than two kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 120 metres. As trail conditions may change, check the route before your visit.
