Trenčín Castle was built in the 11th century as a border fortress. It guarded important fords across the Váh and important Carpathian mountain passes. The structure’s strategic role is reflected in two features: river crossings and mountain pass routes. The barracks house an exhibition of medieval and modern firearms. As the exhibits may change, it is worth checking before your visit.

Castles, Caves and History

The ruins of Vršatec Castle lie in the Vršatské hradné bralo National Nature Reserve and are freely accessible to the public. Check local conditions before setting out. At Považský Castle, the focus is on the climb and the views: the trail is considered not difficult and offers views of the Váh Valley. As trail conditions may change, it is advisable to check them before your climb. In 2009, the castle was named one of the seven wonders of the Trenčín Self-Governing Region.

Pružinská Dúpna Cave also combines nature and history. It is one of Slovakia’s oldest caves and is believed to have formed around ten million years ago. A nature trail leads from the village of Priedhorie to the cave. Visits are possible from May 1 to October 31 by prior arrangement with the cavers; arrange your visit before travelling.

Glassmaking and Mining

The Sklený sen open-air glassmaking museum showcases traditional glassmaking. Guided tours are available for families and individuals, and glass products can be purchased afterward. Prior confirmation of the offer may be necessary, so be sure to check the details before planning your visit. The craft and demonstrations give your outing a different focus from the region’s castle ruins and caves.

The Uhoľná expozícia Handlová presents the history of lignite mining in Slovakia, with a focus on industrial extraction in the 20th century. The basement recreates underground spaces; the displays show how coal was extracted, from manual methods to mechanised mining in the early 20th century. Other exhibition topics include mine ventilation, pumping out mine water, lighting and the development of mine rescue services. This gives you the chance to learn about the technical and practical aspects of mining history as well as the extraction itself.

Cycling and Time by the Water

The Váh Cycle Route is one of Slovakia’s oldest and longest cycling routes. It passes through the Nitra, Trnava, Trenčín and Žilina regions. For an easier ride on paved paths, consider the Trenčín Circuit, which is also suitable for recreational cyclists. It starts at the municipal swimming pool in Trenčín, where you can park right by the route. Check parking options before setting out, and bear in mind that conditions along the route may vary.

Boating, sailing and fishing are possible at the Nosice Reservoir. These seasonal activities can be combined with cycling: the developed Váh Cycle Route runs alongside the reservoir area, making it possible to enjoy water-based attractions and cycling during the same visit. If you plan to take part in these activities, check local conditions and providers.
