Discover Sereď: Museums, history and cycling
Accommodation in Sereď
Sereď brings together a city museum with six permanent exhibitions, a main exhibition on Šintava Water Castle, a Holocaust museum, and evidence of the city’s history and architecture. There is also the Seredský Hodový Jarmok in June and a cycling path along the Váh embankment. If you are looking for a hotel in Sereď, you can use the purpose of your trip as a guide: visiting museums, an interest in history, an event or cycling each offer a different focus. The city is accessible via a motorway connection to Bratislava, Nitra and Trnava, as well as by rail.
Museums and different ways of presenting their collections
The Sereď City Museum is housed in the former Roman Catholic parish, now known as Fándlyho fara. Its six permanent exhibitions include a main exhibition on Šintava Water Castle. It presents archaeological finds from the courtyard of Sereď Castle: ceramics, tiles, valuable glass, weapons, smaller objects and coins from excavations carried out between 1984 and 1992. The range of finds gives the exhibition a clear archaeological focus.
A special way of presenting the collection is offered by the tactile exhibition “A Dialogue of Discovery Through Touch.” It is intended for blind and visually impaired visitors and uses modern technology, including a 3D model and audio commentary in Slovak and English. If the way the exhibition is presented is important to your visit planning, you can make a point of including it.
The Holocaust Museum in Sereď preserves the memory of the events of the Holocaust that affected Slovak Jews and serves to educate the general public. Educational activities take place in the authentic rooms of the former labour camp, later a concentration camp. A tour or explanation in sign language is also available. The historic site and the educational work together form the main focus here.
Architectural history in Sereď
Sereď Castle and Park preserve a surviving remnant of Šintava Castle. It came about through the joining and reconstruction of parts of the former water castle. The bastion of Šintava Fortress contains so-called casemates: these include two pairs of gun embrasures, a large vaulted room and three pillars. The structure was built of bricks in the mid-16th century, around 1550.
Other architectural landmarks represent different periods. The Jewish mikveh, a ritual bath, was built in 1904–1905. The Church of St John the Baptist was built in 1781 in the Baroque-Classicist style and is one of the city’s sights. The cadastral area of Sereď also contains a protected park area whose layout follows the former outer Renaissance fortifications of Šintava Castle. Together, these places offer different ways to explore architectural history, although they do not represent the same period or type of structure.
The fair and cycling path as other reasons to visit
The Seredský Hodový Jarmok takes place regularly in the last third of June, traditionally around St John’s Day. Concerts in the city amphitheatre have been part of the programme since 2015; since 2022, it has also included historical and craft-related activities. If you would like to plan your trip around the fair, check the specific event dates before making arrangements.
For cycle tourists, the route of the Váh Embankment Cycling Path is a point of reference in its own right: it connects the northern and southern parts of Sereď’s cadastral area and forms part of the Vážska cyklo-magistrála. This makes cycling another distinct reason to visit, alongside the museums, architectural history and June event.
