Veľký Grob: Nature, Local History and Embroidery
Accommodation in Veľký Grob
Veľký Grob lies on the boundary between the northern edge of the Danubian Lowland and the southernmost part of the Trnava Hills. Two themes can help you plan your visit: the landscape of wetlands and ponds, and the history of churches, embroidery and rural community life. When looking for a hotel, you can consider which of these interests you would like to shape your stay.
Landscape and Educational Trails
East of Veľký Grob, in the Danubian Lowland, lies the Uľanská mokraď wetland area. The municipality’s cadastral territory also contains four peat bogs, which offer opportunities for fishing. Another way to explore nature is the Náučný chodník okolo „Rašeliny“ educational trail, which runs for about three kilometres around the Rašelinisko pond. Four information panels and an information board introduce key representatives of the nearby fauna and flora, including mammals, fish and birds.
The trail begins at the „Pod vŕbami“ recreation area. There are places to sit, an area for grilling food and shelter from strong sunlight. If you are more interested in local history, there is another thematic option: the local history trail in Veľký Grob runs through the built-up area and has eight information panels. This gives you a choice between a route around a pond focused on nature and a trail about local history.
Cycle route 2212 also leads to Veľký Grob, passing through fields and by a gravel pit lake. So, alongside the educational trails, a cycle route is another specific way to include the area in your excursion plans.
Churches and Architectural History
The Pálfiovský kaštieľ was probably built in the second half of the 17th century. It served as the seat of an economic district of a feudal estate and as the residence of the estate administrator. The Roman Catholic Church of St Anne was built in 1771 by enlarging an earlier Baroque chapel. It houses an organ from the workshop of Valentín Arnold, an organ builder from Trnava; it dates from around 1800.
The Evangelical church was built in 1788 as a Toleration church. In 1936, it was demolished and rebuilt to a design by architect M. M. Harminc; the Baroque-Classical tower from the late 18th century was retained. Taken together, these details tell the story of different stages: the enlargement of a chapel, the construction of a Toleration church and a rebuild in the 20th century.
Embroidery Culture and Local Influences
Before the First World War, Veľký Grob was a well-known centre of embroidery. Embroidery, the distinctive Veľký Grob folk costume, painted rooms and hallways, and the architecture of older houses combine Slovak, Haban, Croatian and Hungarian cultural influences with a distinct local character. The cultural element “Ornament from Čataj and Veľký Grob” was inscribed in 2019.
The embroidery patterns of Čataj and Veľký Grob were also transferred to textile painting and adorn the altar cloths in the Evangelical church. The cultural centre in Čataj is also decorated with murals by Mária Bagiová. In the Veľký Grob area, Pätoprstá Mária was one of the notable embroiderers and pattern designers. She was skilled in traditional pre-drawn embroidery, creating patterns and variations for parts of the women’s folk costume in Veľký Grob.
Markets and Community Life
Several editions of the farmers’ markets were held in the local marketplace in 2022, 2023 and 2024. The 2024 edition was set to feature a wide selection of producers and growers from Veľký Grob and the surrounding region, as well as a refreshment stand. If you are planning to attend a future edition, check the dates before your trip.
The Grobská sedliacka olympiáda was also part of the village days: it was held for the second time in 2022 and for the third time in 2023. The 2022 edition featured several events that put participants’ agricultural skills to the test. The Evangelical congregation of Veľký Grob–Čataj commemorates the consecration of the church on the penultimate Sunday in August. If you would like to plan your travel dates around one of these events, check the exact date in advance.
