Thermal waters, cultural heritage and routes by the water give Dunajská Streda District a range of travel highlights. Dunajská Streda lies in the Podunajská nížina lowlands, in the middle of Žitný ostrov.

Thermal baths with a range of facilities

Thermalpark Dunajská Streda covers 18 hectares and has four indoor and six outdoor pools. It also has a natural lake, offering opportunities for swimming, relaxation and water sports. The thermal water reaches temperatures of up to 39 °C and is believed to have beneficial effects on the musculoskeletal system. Check the latest information about the facility before your visit.

THERMAL CORVINUS Veľký Meder offers a different experience: its pools contain geothermal water at 26 to 38 °C. The complex has seven year-round pools and six outdoor pools, including a wave pool and a children’s pool; there is also a SprayPark. The bathing complex is located in an 80-hectare forest park. The two facilities can thus be distinguished by their temperature ranges, pool types and surroundings. As facilities may change, it is worth checking the latest pool information before your trip.

Churches, a manor house and a museum

In Dunajská Streda, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a testament to the history of architecture: it is originally Gothic and dates from the 14th century. The Yellow Manor House, dating from the first half of the 18th century, houses the Žitnoostrovné Museum. Its exhibitions bring together archaeology and paleontology with art and ethnography. Those looking for different ways to explore the region’s history and culture will find several themes under one roof.

The Vermesova vila is also dedicated to art and cultural life. It presents artworks, hosts cultural events and is an off-site venue of the Slovak National Gallery. Traditional food and drinks, a street of craftspeople and a wine corridor come together at the Žitnoostrovský jarmok. Since the tradition was revived in 1980, the festival has been held every September, with exceptions in 2020 and 2021. It has developed into a cultural and gastronomic festival that introduces young people to traditional crafts and features performances by folk singing and dance groups. Check the latest program dates when planning your trip.

Hydropower and watermills

The Infocentrum in Gabčíkovo combines interactive exhibitions with virtual 3D tours, hologram projections and simulations of the work of a power plant operator. The auditorium offers interactive educational programs on water, energy, the hydropower plant and renewable energy for school groups and the general public. The full tour of the hydropower plant lasts 60 to 80 minutes and is offered in Slovak and Hungarian for pupils, students and adults. Plan to arrange a time in advance; booking procedures may change.

Another stop by the water is the technical and cultural attraction Vodný mlyn Dunajský Klátov. It is located in Dunajský Klátov, on the Klátovské rameno of the Malý Dunaj, and houses a permanent exhibition on water-powered milling with original equipment. The restoration of the mill site in 2016 also included an observation platform on the opposite bank. The Náučný chodník Od mlyna k mlynu educational trail is a summer, one-way water route on the Malý Dunaj. The guided 10-kilometer tour travels by motor raft between the watermill in Tomášikovo and Alba Regia in Jahodná; it must be booked in advance.

Cycling routes and river landscapes

For a loop ride, consider the 53.5-kilometer cycling route to the ship mills, which starts and ends in Dunajská Streda. It has only minor elevation changes, is considered easy and is recommended for families with children. The start and finish are by the bus stop, train station and parking lot in Dunajská Streda. Another option is the 73.5-kilometer cycling route through Žitný ostrov: it leads from Dunajská Streda past the Gabčíkovo hydropower plant toward Komárno. The route is almost flat and runs along state roads as well as the Danube embankment. As part of the International Danube Cycle Route, it offers the opportunity to visit the Dunajské luhy Protected Landscape Area. The two routes can be distinguished by whether they are loops or continue onward, and by their length. Signage, surface conditions and traffic conditions may change; check the latest information before setting out.

The Číčovské mŕtve rameno National Nature Reserve is considered an especially valuable area in Podunajsko and is the best-preserved former branch of the Danube outside its floodplain. 52.28 hectares lie within the cadastral area of Kľúčovec and 27.59 hectares within that of Číčov. The self-guided Náučný chodník Číčovským mŕtvym ramenom circular trail connects with a blue-marked hiking trail and several marked cycling routes. Seasonal access is permitted only from July 15 through the end of February. Plan your visit accordingly. Along the Danube, the Dunajské luhy Protected Landscape Area administration has maintained valuable floodplain forests across an area of 12,285 hectares; this management has been in place since 1998.
