Piešťany District combines notable cultural sites with nature trails and a landscape to explore along a range of routes. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether history and architecture, a cultural programme or outdoor activities should shape your stay. The destinations and routes below offer specific ideas, without assuming that every theme calls for the same kind of visit.

Nature Trails, a Circuit and the Landscape

The Jelenie jamy nature trail is 12.5 kilometres long; the route is expected to take approximately four hours, and six stations highlight natural and historical features of the adjoining part of the Považský Inovec. This self-guided trail is classified as open year-round and of moderate difficulty. It therefore combines a longer hike with interpretive stops, rather than simply marking out a route through the landscape.

The Šterusy–Rebro–Sprosná–Orlie skaly nature trail has a different thematic focus: it covers natural science and cultural history. Those who want to explore both nature and history on a hike will find a specific starting point here. The Čerenec Nature Reserve protects rare forest-steppe plant and animal communities on Mesozoic limestone. One of its distinctive features is the richest occurrence of the large-flowered pasque flower in the Little Carpathians.

At Sĺňava, you can compare the time required for two ways of getting around: the Kolookruh Sĺňava takes approximately three hours on foot and 50 minutes by bicycle. The paved recreational and educational circuit runs around the reservoir and is also suitable for inline skating. Surface conditions may change, so check them before your trip. Sĺňava is a reservoir covering approximately 480 hectares, created on the Váh in the 1960s. In 1980, the area was designated for the protection of waterbirds.

The Cyklochodník Dubová provides pedestrians and people taking part in sports with a way to cross Piešťany without coming into contact with car traffic; it is approximately 2.3 kilometres long. The key points of reference on the Malá Vrbina nature trail are its asphalt surface and accessibility. Conditions may change, so check them again before travelling.

Architecture, History and Museums

In Vrbové, the leaning bell tower is a landmark and one of the reasons for the town’s nickname, “Slovak Pisa.” The town’s synagogue was built in the Moorish style in 1882–1883. Together, these two buildings offer different insights into the town’s architectural history.

Kostolec preserves the foundations of a partially reconstructed Great Moravian manor and a pre-Romanesque rotunda. The site lies at the western foot of the Považský Inovec and offers views across the lower Váh region. In Chtelnica, Kaštieľ Chtelnica is listed as a national cultural monument; its grounds include a park and a pond. The Regional Museum in Kaštieľ presents the history of Chtelnica and its surroundings in sections on history, palaeontology and speleology. The Malokarpatská galéria regularly hosts changing exhibitions by regional artists across three floors.

Piešťany also combines cultural sites with specific visiting arrangements. Since 2022, Dom umenia Piešťany has been a national cultural monument and one of the main co-organisers of the international Piešťany Festival, held annually during the summer months since 1955. Dom umenia hosts concerts during the season; the Rieger-Kloss organ is regularly used for organ concerts, while individual programmes vary. Tradičné umelecké remeslá takes place annually and showcases folk art, traditional techniques and cultural heritage.

Textiles are also central to exploring regional craft traditions: an ethnographic exhibition includes traditional costumes from Piešťany and Krakovany, embroidery and textiles typical of the region. At the Za krakovskú bránu Museum in Krakovany, bobbin lace is regularly displayed during the lace festival, hosted by the museum. Visits to the ethnographic museum in Krakovany are possible by prior arrangement. Please confirm the visiting arrangements in advance.

The Spa Island and Practical Information

The spa park on Spa Island is part of Piešťany’s protected monument zone. The Colonnade Bridge connects the pedestrian zone in the historic city centre with Spa Island, where the Kúpalisko EVA thermal swimming pool complex is also located. Kaštieľ Moravany nad Váhom is currently closed to the public. Visitor access may change, so check before visiting.
