Trakovice: Sacred Architecture, Sculptures and Village Traditions
Accommodation in Trakovice
The Dudváh flows through the eastern part of Trakovice’s built-up area from north to south. The stream and the flat alluvial landscape of the Danubian Lowland provide geographical bearings; at the same time, sacred buildings, sculptures and local events shape the cultural character of the place. This offers a range of themes to consider when planning a trip: architectural history, landscape and recurring cultural traditions.
Church and Sacred Art in Trakovice
The Church of St Stephen the King was built in 1811 in the Neoclassical style and is Trakovice’s most important protected landmark. It has a single nave, a built-in tower and a semicircular presbytery. The term “single nave” refers to a church interior with one main nave; the presbytery is the choir area by the altar. Together, these features describe both the layout and the Neoclassical character of the building.
Other sacred buildings include the restored small Chapel of St John of Nepomuk. The oldest stone sculpture in Trakovice is a statue of the Virgin Mary, erected in 1884 and restored in 1999. The St Vojtech Association commissioned a statue of the Holy Trinity in 1923; a statue of Saints Cyril and Methodius dates from 1924. A statue of St Florian stands beside the fire station. These works offer several distinct points in time from which to explore the religious art of the place.
Another historical artwork is a painting of St Alexius from 1792. It is by the painter Jozef Brandt from Hlohovec. Cultural interest therefore extends beyond architecture to include a dated work of painting.
The Dudváh, Landscape and Activities
Trakovice lies in the flat alluvial landscape of the Danubian Lowland. The Dudváh’s course through the eastern part of the built-up area provides a concrete point of reference for finding your way around the village. The opportunities for cycling along the Dudváh are very good; the Považská Route connects to Trnava. Walks and hikes in Trakovice are also very good leisure options. For travellers who want to combine cycling with a destination outside the village, the route to Trnava mentioned above offers a different point of reference from the generally rated opportunities for walking and hiking.
The road connection is also specified: State Road II/513 runs through the centre of Trakovice towards Hlohovec and Nitra. Check your route against current navigation data for your journey.
Cultural Events and Local Traditions
Divadlo na TrakOch stages theatre performances of varying size each year. Recurring events include Noc Návratov, a traditional annual oldies disco with a theatre programme, which has been held since 2002. The theatre has also put on its own annual St Nicholas performances for children since 2002. These events differ in format and audience: one combines oldies music with theatre, while the other offers St Nicholas performances for children.
The Municipality of Trakovice and Divadlo na TrakOch held the fifth edition of the summer cinema in 2023. The summer cinema is one of Trakovice’s regular cultural events. An exhibition of fruit, vegetables and flowers is also held in September, accompanied by a harvest blessing during a Mass. If you would like to time your hotel stay to coincide with a particular performance, the summer cinema or this September tradition, check the current dates for your travel period.
When choosing a reason to visit, you can weigh up Trakovice’s themes: sacred architecture and historical artworks offer a cultural-history focus, while cycling, walks and hiking appeal to other leisure interests. Events add specific dates to your plans. Which option suits you best depends on whether you would rather plan your trip around the landmarks, outdoor activities or the events calendar.
