Boleráz: Churches, Archaeological Traces and Landscape
Accommodation in Boleráz
Boleráz brings together ecclesiastical architectural history, archaeological traces, and a landscape of hills, plains, and valleys. These themes provide a concrete framework for understanding Boleráz as a travel destination.
Churches and Architectural History
The foundation stone of the present-day parish church of Saint Michael the Archangel in Boleráz was laid on May 1, 1786; construction was completed on September 15, 1787. The main altar is dominated by a statue of Saint Michael the Archangel slaying a dragon.
Another architectural point of interest is the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Klčovany (Boleráz). It is a Baroque single-nave church with an integrated tower and was restored in 1856. The churches can be distinguished by various features: the parish church is notable for the completion date and its main altar; the church in Klčovany is distinguished by its Baroque single-nave design, integrated tower, and restoration.
Archaeological Traces
The archaeological history goes back long before the churches were built. At Hradisko Zámok, about 1 km southwest of Boleráz, there was a fortified settlement around 1500 BC, with a rampart, palisades, and a pointed ditch. Later land use has affected the site. There are at least five settlement sites in Boleráz associated with the Boleráz group; none of them has been systematically investigated. This early settlement adds a much older layer of history to the considerably later church buildings.
Hills, Plains, and the Trnávka
Boleráz lies in the Trnavská pahorkatina, about 14 km northwest of the district town of Trnava. The landscape changes considerably within the cadastral area: the northern part belongs to the Podmalokarpatská pahorkatina and has features of a lowland hilly landscape. The southern part of the cadastral area, in the Trnavská tabuľa, has a rolling plain landscape. The Trnávka stream flows through the treeless area of Boleráz in a shallow, wide valley. Thus, the location in relation to Trnava provides the regional context, while the northern and southern subareas explain the changes in landscape within Boleráz.
Water, Culture, and Sport
The Boleráz reservoir was built in the 1960s and, in addition to its recreational function, is also important for flood protection. Conditions for water sports on the reservoir are considered very good.
Boleráz’s regular cultural calendar includes the traditional “Pochovávanie basy” before the start of Lent and celebrations for the feast of Saint Catherine. The two occasions take place at different times of the year: the “Pochovávanie basy” tradition takes place before Lent, while the celebrations for Saint Catherine are held on her feast day. Both are recurring cultural events in the town.
The TJ Slavoj Boleráz sports complex includes a football pitch and other sports facilities. Individual facilities may change as part of planned improvements; check the latest information before visiting.
