Zavar combines landscape, sacred architecture and local history. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Zavar, these themes can help you match the destination to your reason for visiting. Local history stretches from prehistoric settlement periods to cultural events in more recent times. In the history of architecture, a Neo-Gothic church stands alongside a Neoclassical manor house.

Location and Landscape

Zavar lies eight kilometres southeast of Trnava at an elevation of 127 metres above sea level. The town is situated on the eastern edge of the Trnava loess plateau. At the same time, the eastern part of the municipality lies in the shared floodplain of the Blava and Dudváh rivers. The loess plateau and the river floodplain are two distinct geographical features: the floodplain covers the eastern part of the municipality, not the entire town. Together, the two landscapes complete the geographical picture of Zavar.

Church Architecture and Local History

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was built in 1907 in the Neo-Gothic style on the site of an earlier Romanesque church. The construction date is thus linked to the history of an older predecessor building. The interior features ribbed plaster vaults with a Gothicising profile. These terms describe a form influenced by Gothic architecture, while the church itself is Neo-Gothic. The current stained-glass windows date from around 1955. The tower is 32.40 metres high and contains three bells. The construction period, predecessor building and interior details offer different ways to understand the church’s architecture.

Other features of the town also bear historical significance. The memorial plaque to Zavar’s parish administrators was unveiled on 7 September 2008; the ceremony began with a festive Mass in the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. A bronze statue of Saint Barbara was unveiled in the local cemetery on 31 October 2010. Kaštieľ Manor House was built in the early 19th century in the Neoclassical style. The church and manor house thus represent different periods of construction and architectural styles within the town’s history.

Early Settlement and Cultural Heritage

Archaeological finds attest to settlement in Zavar during the Neolithic, Eneolithic and Early Bronze Age. The first written mention of the town dates from 1255, when Zavar was referred to as “de Zovvor”. The early settlement periods and the written form of the name reveal different layers of the town’s history.

The cultural history also extends beyond the buildings. Gejza DusĂk, who came from Zavar, was a pioneer and a leading figure of the founding generation of Slovak popular music composers. The ZavarskĂ˝ Chamber Choir was founded in 1996 and represented Zavar in the churches of Trnava.

Local craft traditions included a workshop and a school where embroidery and lace were made for the Izabella association in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Women in Zavar were still embroidering in the first third of the 20th century to supplement their income. Embroidery can therefore be understood both as organised production and as a source of additional income.

Events and Culinary Traditions

The Zavarská desiatka took place in 2023 and 2024, providing a dated glimpse of the town’s sporting events. At the Slivkové hody, held in Zavar on 28 September 2008, visitors could sample plum dumplings, Šúľance, Báleše and other plum specialities.

The 2017 Country hody programme included opportunities for children to ride horses and a camel, a bouncy castle, and historic cars to admire. The examples are distinctly different: the run represents a sporting event, the Slivkové hody celebrates plum-based foods, and the Country hody featured an entertainment programme at the time.
