Veľké Orvište can be explored through two distinct themes: the architectural and local history surrounding the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, and the recreation and fishing area at Záhumnie Pond. They offer different starting points for planning a trip, from historic architectural styles to activities on the water.

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and its architectural history

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary stands at a road junction at Barina, within the grounds of the local cemetery and beside the roads toward Ostrov and Bašovce. According to available information, it was built in 1743. The building has a single nave, a flat ceiling, and a semicircular presbytery. A single-nave building has one main nave; the presbytery is the area around the altar. Its semicircular shape gives this area a rounded end.

In 1940, the church was extended and enlarged with an addition on a square floor plan. Its architectural history therefore comprises two dated phases: its construction in the 18th century and its expansion in the 20th century. The square floor plan describes the shape of the addition, while “extended and enlarged” describes the changes made to the church as a whole.

An epitaph is also among the historic details: it commemorates the late Baron František Trauttmansdorff and was restored in 2012. A bell tower was built in 1934 from stone taken from a demolished Protestant church; the stone had been brought from Vrbové. The bell tower was restored in 2009. Another detail is a 50-kilogram bell made by R. Manoušek of Brno and donated to the Protestant community.

Záhumnie Pond: Recreation and sport fishing

The recreation and leisure area in the cadastral area of Veľké Orvište is located at the local Záhumnie Pond. It offers visitors opportunities for relaxation and active recreation and is used by both residents of the municipality and visitors from the wider area. Záhumnie Pond is a still-water body covering two hectares, with a depth of 0.8 to 1.8 metres.

The Záhumnie association offers sport fishing to non-members as well; participation is subject to the association’s rules. The Jarný pstruh XVI. ročník fishing competition, organised by RZ Záhumnie Veľké Orvište, took place on 21 and 22 March 2026 and was a trout spinning competition. For the 2026 competition, the route to the fishing area at the RZ Záhumnie lake, when coming from Piešťany, led right after the church in the direction of Pobedím. This guidance links a named starting point with the turn and the fishing area destination.

Early traces and written history

The earliest settlement identified in the cadastral area of Veľké Orvište was near Niže cesty. It belongs to the Lengyel culture and dates to around 3500 BC. The first written mention of the place is a different milestone: Veľké Orvište is recorded in 1113 under the name villa Rivvis in the so-called Zobor Charter. The archaeological dating and the charter thus represent different historical reference points—a prehistoric settlement and a later written place name.

Another find connects the local history with the early modern period. A hoard of four gold coins and 78 silver coins, buried in the 17th century, was discovered in the cadastral area. Together with the older settlement, the written mention from 1113, and the dated architectural changes to the church, these offer several ways to explore the history of Veľké Orvište. Visitors interested in the local character of the area will find both architectural details and archaeological and written historical reference points; at Záhumnie Pond, the focus is instead on recreation and the opportunity to enjoy sport fishing.
