Veselé: Sacred History and Local Festivities
Accommodation in Cheerful
Veselé lies at the transition between the northeastern edge of the Trnava Hills and the Považský foothills of the Danubian Lowland. The village is situated on a terrace on the right bank of the Dudváh and has partly retained its agricultural character to this day. The landscape, sacred buildings, archaeological traces and local celebrations give a stay a range of thematic highlights.
Landscape and Character of the Village
The geographical description offers two perspectives: Veselé lies on a terrace by the river and at the transition between two landscape regions. Together with its partly preserved agricultural character, this gives the village a rural feel. Those who like to place their stay in its landscape context will find a distinct connection to the surrounding area alongside the cultural themes.
Church and Sacred Art
The Baroque Church of St. Bartholomew was built between 1736 and 1743 on the site of an older sacred building. During a restoration in 1925, two side aisles were added, turning it into a three-aisled church. Its building history thus brings together its Baroque origins in the 18th century and a later structural extension.
Baroque stone statues of St. Florian and St. Wendelin, dating from the 18th century, stand in the rectory garden. Another religious site is the Škublič family chapel. It is dedicated to the Exaltation of the Holy Cross; Masses are held there occasionally.
Archaeological and Biographical Traces
At the Hradisko-Podzámske site, settlement traces were concentrated within an Early Bronze Age fortification. An archaeological investigation at the Hradisko site confirmed the existence of a medieval castle complex dating from the 11th to the 15th century. These periods long predate the construction of St. Bartholomew’s Church, giving the village’s history several clearly distinct historical layers.
Štefan Moyses also connects Veselé to a life story extending beyond the village: he was born here in 1797 and became chairman of Matica slovenská on 3 August 1863. His birthplace is the listed, single-storey folk house at Veselé 93. The building was constructed in the second half of the 18th century. For those interested in cultural history, the architectural history of the village and the life story of a person born in Veselé come together here.
Festivals and Local Activities
The Veselské hody is a recurring local celebration, with editions planned for 2024 and 2025. It is celebrated on the feast day of St. Bartholomew, the patron saint of the parish church and parish. The programme combines food and grilling with dance music, family activities and football. In 2024, activities took place at the Veselé football stadium, Pizzeria U Kováča and in the village centre.
The RC Klub Veselé, which builds remote-controlled model aircraft, is part of local club life. The club meets in suitable areas around the village; its models can often be seen there. Another aspect of the local history of livelihoods is basket weaving, known as košikárstvo, which was a supplementary source of income in Veselé.
When looking for a hotel for a stay in Veselé, you can consider whether your trip will focus more on the village’s history or its local festival culture. If you would like to include the Veselské hody, check the dates for your chosen travel year.
