Eppingen: Half-timbered Houses, Lake and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Eppingen
Eppingen offers a range of ways to plan your stay around different interests: the old town brings together half-timbered architecture and local history, Mühlbach Lake offers a waterside focus, and hiking trails lead to individual viewpoints or through several towns. If you are looking for a hotel in Eppingen, you can first decide whether architecture, the lakeside or a hiking route should shape your stay. The differences between these destinations can help you plan.
Half-Timbered Architecture and Local History in the Old Town
Eppingen’s old town, with around 120 exposed half-timbered houses from different periods, is a tourist attraction. A prominent landmark is the “Alte Universität” (Old University): it is the largest and tallest half-timbered house in Eppingen and was built in 1494/95 in the style of a late-medieval department store. While the houses show the variety of periods represented in the old town, the construction date of the Old University provides a specific reference point for a single building.
The “Alte Universität” town and half-timbered museum has permanent collections covering more than 800 square metres on the development of half-timbered construction and the town’s history. The museum thus brings together two subjects that go hand in hand when looking at Eppingen’s half-timbered houses: the building style and the town’s history. A guided tour lasts about 60 minutes. As tour arrangements may change, check the current options in advance.
A tour of Eppingen’s old town also includes the late Gothic Catholic town church, with its valuable wall paintings. The paintings and the church add another specific aspect to the half-timbered focus of an old-town walk.
Mühlbach Lake and the Sandstone Trail
Mühlbach Lake offers a different focus for leisure planning. Its surface area is 8,300 m², and its depth ranges from 1.10 to 2.80 m. On-site features include excellent water quality, sunbathing areas, stepped seating and a shallow, sandy entry to the water. Nearby cycling and hiking trails add to the leisure options. The offer therefore includes both lakeside amenities and trails in the surrounding area.
In Mühlbach, the second section of the Mühlbach Sandstone Trail offers a different experience: ten works of art line the approximately 500-metre stretch through the green space in the town centre. This section was completed in November 2017. Its short length and artworks set it apart from hiking descriptions focused on steps, viewpoints or a route between several towns.
Hikes with Different Highlights
The EP2 – Wander3Klang Eppingen hike passes Himmelsleiter as its first intermediate stop. The impressive climb in Eppingen Forest has 202 steps and leads up to Baumannshütte. The “Kraichgaublick” viewpoint is also a detour on this hike. From there, the view extends across Eppingen, deep into the Kraichgau and as far as the Odenwald. A small wooden platform with benches invites you to rest or have a picnic. Himmelsleiter is therefore a named stop along the route, with the viewpoint as an additional detour.
The EP4 – Stadtbahnwandern Eppingen-Sulzfeld hike starts at Eppingen station. It passes numerous viewpoints on its way to the stonemason village of Mühlbach and continues to Ravensburg Castle, ending at Sulzfeld station. The described route therefore goes beyond Eppingen and ends at a different station from the one where it starts.
The Jägersee is also part of the wider route: a lake surrounded by forest at the foot of Ottilienberg. The Waldfühlpfad forest trail is also located at Jägersee. Comparing the two hikes, EP2 names Himmelsleiter and Kraichgaublick as prominent destinations, while EP4 describes a sequence of places and viewpoints as far as Sulzfeld and also leads to Jägersee. The routes thus differ in their specifically named stops and their course.
