Landscape and early history

Ittlingen lies in the upper Elsenz Valley, in the heart of the Kraichgau hills. Its scenic location offers excellent opportunities for varied cycling and hiking tours. Its historical roots range from written records dating back to the early Middle Ages to buildings from later centuries. When choosing where to stay, you can therefore take both the landscape and the town’s history into account.

The written history of Ittlingen begins in 772/773, with donations from the estates of high-ranking noblewomen in the Ittlingen district to Lorsch Abbey. This took place during the reigns of Charlemagne and Louis the Pious. The donors, their estates and the abbey that received them provide a concrete context for this early date. The written record thus begins with a specific donation involving named participants and a clearly identified location.

Schoolhouses and town hall

Ittlingen’s community and civic center is a former schoolhouse dating from 1845, next to the Protestant church. The current town hall was built in 1911 as a small school castle. There are 66 years between the buildings’ construction dates. The buildings reflect different functions: one was a schoolhouse, while the other is now the town hall and was built as a small school castle.

Historic landmarks at Bauberg

At Bauberg, the old manor and bailiff’s court, along with the tithe barn and manor house, are among the local history landmarks worth visiting. The climb on Bauberg Street is about 100 meters long. The manor farm is well preserved and gives an impression of the historical scale of the administration of the former estate of the Lords of Gemmingen-Hornberg. The distance and the historical context offer different perspectives on Bauberg: one concerns the climb, the other the manor farm’s former administrative function.

Ittlingen’s oldest house is a farmhouse at Bauberg 11, dating from before the Thirty Years’ War. It therefore belongs to an earlier building period than the community and civic center of 1845 and the town hall of 1911. Its particular historical significance lies in its age, whereas the manor farm is notable for its role in administering the former estate.
