Accommodation in Minster Lovell
When looking for a hotel for your stay in Minster Lovell, it helps to decide what you want to focus on during your trip: medieval architecture, a walk along the River Windrush or a cycling tour through several villages. Minster Lovell is in a rural setting in Oxfordshire. The ruins of Minster Lovell Hall, the round dovecote and St Kenelm's Church offer different ways to explore the area's history; meanwhile, the river and surrounding countryside shape the routes.
Manor House, Dovecote and Church
Minster Lovell Hall was built in the 1430s by William, Baron of Lovell and Holand. The picturesque ruins are the remains of a 15th-century manor house in a rural setting beside the River Windrush. The hall and dovecote are next to Minster Lovell Church; both are three miles west of Witney and away from the A40.
Minster Lovell Dovecote is a round 15th-century dovecote, 125 m north of the remains of Minster Lovell Hall. Its interior walls have 18 rows of nesting holes, each row with a ledge for perching. There are 600 nesting holes in total; those in the bottom row have since been bricked up. The dovecote can only be viewed from the outside. As access details may change, check them before your visit.
The medieval St Kenelm's Church was built around 1450. Together with the ruins and the dovecote, it is another historic landmark in Minster Lovell.
Walks and Scenery
Much of Minster Lovell's scenic area lies within the Cotswolds AONB. A circular route between Minster Lovell and Crawley leads to the ruins of Minster Lovell Hall and then through the churchyard, across fields and to a recreation area. The walking route between the Cotswold villages passes through water meadows and rolling countryside, and runs partly alongside the River Windrush. Check route conditions and access before setting out, as both may change.
Local History
Minster Lovell Historical Society holds talks on a variety of historical topics and welcomes visitors. Meetings take place from September to April, except in December: on the fourth Monday of each month at 19:30 in St Kenelm's Hall. Admission costs £3, payable at the door. The Society also organises a summer visit to a historic site. Check the date before your visit.
Guided walks around Minster Lovell can be arranged to suit visitors' interests and requirements. A walk can include Chartervill and the old village, or focus on either one of these areas. Confirm the arrangements before travelling.
On Foot and by Bike
A route description published in 2024 outlines a 21-mile cycle tour starting at St Mary's Church in Cogges, estimated to take around 4 to 5 hours. The route links historic churches, picturesque villages and countryside; it passes through Witney, Curbridge, Brize Norton, Swinbrook, Astall and Minster Lovell. The terrain is mostly easy to moderate, with a few gentle climbs. The organisers have not tested the route; bear this in mind when planning.
The circular walk covers the area between Minster Lovell and Crawley, while the cycle tour places Minster Lovell on a route through several villages. The two options therefore differ mainly in the area they cover.
